It has three Seif. 1 Signs of a [kosher] locust: Whatever has four legs. It has four wings. Its wings cover most of the length and circumference of its body. And it has two hind legs to leap (meaning to jump and move from place to place), even if it does not currently have them and will grow them later. Even if it has all of these signs, it is not permitted unless it is called a "locust" or there is a tradition that they are called "locusts." 2 Locusts do not require ritual slaughter. 3 The excrement of impure locusts is permissible.

סימני חגבים ובו שלושה סעיפים: סעיף א סימני חגבים -- כל שיש לו ד' רגלים וד' כנפים וכנפיו חופין את רוב אורך גופו ורוב היקפו ויש לו שני כרעים לנתר (פי' לקפץ ולהעתיק ממקום למקום) בהם, ואפילו אין לו עכשיו ועתיד לגדלם לאחר זמן. ואע"פ שיש בו כל הסימנים הללו אינו מותר אלא אם כן שמו "חגב" או שיש להם מסורת ששמו "חגב": סעיף ב חגבים אינם טעונים שחיטה. סעיף ג ציר חגבים טמאים -- מותר.
