4 Maccabees is a book of the Septuagint, the Greek Jewish Scriptures. It is considered canonical in neither modern Christianity nor Judaism, but was used as scripture in Roman Empire-era Christianity, and is kept as an appendix in modern Eastern Orthodox bibles. The author is unknown, although the work was incorrectly attributed to Josephus in some ancient sources. It was probably written in the 1st century CE (~1 CE–100 CE).
