R. s. 42 (ed. corrup. מטרופ׳) read with Ar. שבררו א׳ אותה קורא ולמה א׳ החורי ואת לחירות להן ויצאו אותה . . . they selected it for their residence and made themselves independent.

אלימא I, אילימא 1) (=אין if; לא=לי not; מא quidem, somehow) unless, but for (followed by שר; cmp. אלמלא 1). Num. R. s. 18, end וכ׳ שמעמ׳ . . . . . מי אי׳ but for the sticky substance in the nose intercepting the evil smell. -- 2) (=אילוימא if somehow) if (ruling the verbo without mediation of a relative; cmp. אלמלא 2). Ib. א׳ וכ׳ תופשת if (the harsh ringing sound) should take a. permanent hold of his ear, it would be bound up (with his body, sub. בלבו as in Tanh. R. s. 19 (referring to Amos VI, 11) אל׳ מיניה אית רסיסה הדין (read רסיסא) of what is dem- olished by making breaches, there remain ruins, וחדין אי׳ מיניה לית בקיעא while of what is demolishedby chopp- ing, no ruins remain; Koh. Dict.) a luscious wine (vinum dulce) for which the grapes were to be dried in the sun for three days, after which they were gathered and trodden on the fourth during the full fervor of the mid- day heat (Sm.
