אם f. (b. h.; אמם, אמה, אם; to press, embrace, poin, sapport, lead; v. אמן, אמר, אמן &c.; cmp. אב) 1) mother, freq. ==my mother. Sabb. 134a; a. fr. -- Y. M. Kat. III, beg. 81c אמו חק הניח left his mother's lap (Palestine). -- Num. R. s. 10 (ref. to immo Prov. XXXI, 1) וכ׳ התורה . . . זו אמו 'his mother' that means the Law which trained Solomon and which is called a mother of those studying it, as you read (Prov. II, 3; text אם is read אםem). -- 2)womb, mouth of the womb. Hull. III, 2(54a) וכ׳ האם ניטלה if the mouth of the womb is absent, cut out. Bekh. IV, 4 (28b). -- Trnsf. legitimate existence, authority. Succ. 6b, a. fr. למסורת א׳ יש the traditional Scripture text (etters without vowels) is authoritative in Biblical interpretation, opp. למקרא א׳ יש the tradit- ional reading (vowels) must guide us, e. g. בחלב (Ex. XXIII, 19) may be read בחלב as the traditional vocal- ization, or בחלב in the fat of. -- Pl. אמהות, אימהות. Kidd. IV, 4 her genealogy must be traced back א׳ ארבע to the mothers of four generations (on each side) which is eight mothers. Y. Snh. אמא II, אמי, fut. יימא, imper. אימא (אם to join, v. אמר) to say, speak, think. Targ. Y. Gen. XXXIII, 10. -- Preq. in Talmud. -- תימא אפילו even if you will say, i. e. it may come right even if you assume that &c. Succ. 13b; a. fr. -- לימא מי, מיזנימא), or לימא must it be said, does it mean to sayh Ib.; a. fr. -תימא־ וכי (ואי) and if you should object. אמאוס, אימאוס pr. n. pl. (~~~~~, ~~~~~. hellenized form of חמה, חמתה) Emmaus, Ammaus, a town in the plain of Judea (or Philistea), renowned, in Tahmudic days, for its warm springs and luxurious life.
