עונה IV f. (denom. of עין; cmp. Arab. 'na manare) welling, flux. Men. 64b a woman said, I am offfering a. sacrifice לעונתי after my recovery from flux, . . מינה סבור ממש לעונתה (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l.) which they understood to mean really for her fux, when the suggestion was offered, סיכנה בעינה שמא (v. preced.) perhaps she was in danger of losing her eye-sight; Y. Shek. V, 48d לעינתי, interpreted כמעיין שופעת, v. שפע. -- [Rashi, ignoring Y. Shek. l. c., takes our w. in the sense of due season for a. sacrifice, v. עונה.]-[Tosef. M. Kat. I, 2 מי של עונתו, v. עוגה.]
עוני I, עני m. (b. h.; ענה II, v. עונה II) misery, povcrty, priשation. Ab. IV, 9 וכ׳ מע׳. . המקיים כל he who fulflls the Law in spite of poverty, shall finally do so in wealth; מע׳ לבטלה סופו... המבטל וכל and he who neglects the Law on account of his wealth, shall finally neglect it fromm poverty. M. Kat. 17b, a. e. או מיתה או. . . מקום כל ע׳ wherever the scholars put their eyes (upon a person, i. e. decreed the ban), there follows either death or pov- erty. Midr. Till. to Ps. Vref. to IChr. XXII, 13) בצער בעניי וכ׳ what does in my misery mean ?? In the pain which I suffered about it. Sifre Deut. 130 (ref. to Deut. XVI, 3) וכ׳ עינוי שם על ע׳ לחם נקרא למה why is it called bread of misery? עונקתא f. =עונקא (v. אונקא I) neck. Y. Ber. II, 5c bot. רפיא. עונקתיה כדוון עד is this man's neck loose yet?; ib. וכ׳ דהוות ע׳ ההיא this neck which was loose is now laced (thou art going to be hanged).
עונש, ענש m. (b. h.; ענש) 1) punishment, penalty; responsibility. Snh. 89b ווכ׳ עובשו בר, v. בדאי; Ab. d'R. N. ch. XXX. Snh. 54b top, a. fr. מנין אזהרה שמענו ע׳ we learn here the penalty, whence do we learn the prohibition? Yeb. 3b, v. אזהרה. Ib. 47a מצות של עונשן אותו ומודיעין and we acquaint him (the proselyte) with the penalty attending the neglect of the duties (of an Israelite), v. עון. Sabb. 87a וכ׳ עונשה פירש בתחלה first he explained the penalty for trespassing the Law, . . and then the reward for observing it. B. Bath. 88b מדות של עונשן the respon- sibility connected with measures (the punishment for giving wrong measures); Yeb. 21a עונשין (corr. acc.); a. fr. -- 2) punishable act, sin. Sabb. 115b וכ׳ האחרוון ע׳ גדול the sinfulness of the latter act is greater than &c. B. עוף II (b. h.; denom. of עוף) to fly. Sabb. 26a מפני עם שהוא because itt is volatile (explosive). [Sot. 443a עפו, עף Ar., v. צוף.] Pol. עופף same.
