עני, ענאch. same. Pa. עני 1) to tarry, be detained, late. Y. Sot. I, 16a bot. דריש ע׳ זמן חד once he (R. Meir) was long in preaching (preached to a late hour, or came late); Num. R. s. 9 איעני דרשה (tthpa., read דרושה or דרשא); Lev. R. s. 9 תנתא מדרשא (corr. acc.). Y. Bicc. III, 65c bot. מיסק ע׳ זמן חד (not מסיק) once he was late in coming; (Keth. 62b משכתיה שמעתא); a. e. מריי־ עני be slow, my lord (a respectful form of interrupting and introducing an objection or cor- rection). עני m. (b. h.; ענה II) [afflicted, humble,] poor. Sabb. עניבה II m. ch. = ענבא, berry; דפילא ע׳ elephant's berry, name of a plant the stalk of which is quadrangular. Y. Shebu. III, 34d bot.; Y. Maasr. V, end, 52a דפ׳ אביבא (read; אניבא); Y. Ned. III, 37d bot. דיעלא ארכובה (prob. to be read; דפילא) elephantt's foott (elephantopos).

עניות f. (denom. of עני) misery, poverty; stint. Sabb. 33a; Kidd. 49b ע׳ (הרוח) לגסות סימן poverty is a symptom of haughtiness (haughtiness will be followed by poverty). Ib. דתורה ע׳ ע׳ מאי the poverty (of the Babylonians) means poverty of the Law (ignorance). Sabb. 102b; Keth. 106b, a. e. עשירות במקום ע׳ אין there must be no stint where there is wealth, i. e. you must not be small in large affairs. Ex.
