עקימה II f. (עקם) 1) currature, crookedness. Y. Kil. IV, 29b top (in Chald. dict.) וכ׳ תרתיי ע׳ עי owing to the curvature (of the garden bed) two rows of vines disappear (become indiscernible). -- 2) פה עקימת or עע שפתים curving the mouth (the lips), speaking sulkily, mumbling, in gen. tak, opp. to מעשה action. Mel. 17b וכ׳ שפתיך מע׳ from the argument thou didst uter in an undertone one can tell hat thou art a scholar. Keth. 455b לו גרמה שפתיו ע׳ (not גרמו) his talk (casting suspicion on his wife) brought it (the punishment) upon him. Snh. 65a מעשה הוי שפתיו ע׳ talk (e. g. blasphemy, false testi- mony) is considered an action (can be punished). Ib.b; B. Mets. 90b (in reference to guiding an animal by means of a human voice).

R. s. 2; Yalk. ib. 810 בקומפון). -2) circumventtion, lawyer's trick. B. Kam. 11 3a בע׳ עליו באין we bewilder him by subtle arguments; וכ׳ בע׳ עליו באין אין you must not do it, because you must sanctify the name of the Lord (by your integrity in dealing with a gentile).
עקיצה f. (עקץ) 1) sting. Ab. II, 10 עקיצת עקיצתן עקרב (Ar. עקיסת עקיסתן) their sting (the scholars ban) is a scorpion's sting; Num. R. s. &, begea--2) cutting fruit by the stalk. Y. Maas. Sh. V, 56b top ע׳ שכר remuneration for cutting, contrad. to לקיטה.
*עקיק m. akik, name of a jewel in the high priesis breast-plate. Targ. Cant. V, 14 (Targ. Ex. XXVIII, 17 ירקן, ירקתא).

עקירה f. (עקר) 1) tearing looze, plucking. Snh. 68a עקירתן למדני teach me, how to tear them out. - Pl. עקידות. Sifre Deut. 17 1, v. עיקור. - 2) removal from place, lifting up. Sabb. 2b וכ׳ עקירת כל, v. הוצאה. Ib. 3a גופו עקירת וכ׳ חפן כעקידת is moving one's body (starting to walk) like lifting an object from its place; a. fr. -- 3) uproot- ing, undoing. Y. Hor. I, 46a הגוף עקירת a decision which abrogates a Biblical law entirely; Y. Yeb. X, 10d bot. -- 4) makimg childless, exxtinction. Pesik. R. s. 47 (ref. to להשמידו, Deut.IX, 20) ובנות בנים עקירת extinction of sons and daughters (v. כילוי).

עקל (e. עקל) m. (preced.) 1) a bale of loose texture containing the olire pullp to be pressed. Maasr. I, 7; Tosef. ib.I, 7 (Var. עוקל). Toh. X, 8; Y. Ab. Zar. V, end, 45b הע׳ נצרים של, v. infra. Sabb. 144b הבד בית מע׳ היוצא מוחל Ar. (ed. מעיקול) the watery fuid which oozes out of the bale made up for the press; (Tosef. Toh. X, 3 מעיקת; R. S. to Toh. IX, 1שוקת מן, corr. acc.). Tosef. l. c. ועשאו כינסו עיקל (R. S. l. c. שוקת) if lhe collected the fluid and put it back into the bale. Snh. 26a וכ׳ הבד בית לע׳ לומר יכול he (who trims vvines in the Sabbatical year) may say, I need the twigs to make a bale for the press. Ib. (proverbial expression) לעקלקלות אם לע׳ אם יודע הלב the heart knows whether it is done for ekel (a legitimate purpose) or out of 'akalkaloth (perverseness); Y. Shebi. IV, 35a; Lam. Dehr. ובעיקל) water that comes up (and settles) in the hull, on the ballast or on the rudders; [Maim.; in the cavity in the hull made for the reception of drippings from the deck; cmp. עוקה].
