פחד (b. h.) [to breathe, pant,; to fear; to be anxious. Esth. R. to V, 1 תפחדי למה why art thou afraid? Midr. Till. to Ps. XIV וכ מן פחדו שלא that they were not afraid of the Lord; a. e. Ni~Lנפחד to be frightened, excited. Esth. R. to IV, 15 היתה וכ׳ מאוד נפחדת אסתר Esther was greatly excited on ac- count of the evil &c. Oant. R. to III, 8 ומזדעזעין מתיראין ונפחדין afraid, trembling, and excited; a. e. Hi~הפחי to frighten. Num. R.s. 16 להפהידו כשמבקשין when they want to frighten the child, v. דצועה; a. e. . Pi. פיחד same. Part. pass. מפוחד; pl. מפוחדים. Sirra. B'har, Par. 3, ch. IV (ref. to Lev. XXV, 19) ולא מפוזרים לא מפ׳ neither scattered, nor frightened. (differ. in ed.) why art thou afraid?; Yalk. Job 897; Yalk. Is. l. c. מפחד (Part. pass.). Pes. 11 1b, sq. מפחיד will be in fear (without knowing why); a. e.
פחד m. (b. h.; preced.) fear. Esth. R. to IV, 6 ורעד פ׳ fear and trembling. Yalk. Ex. 181 עליהם פחדם נפל the dread of them fell upon them. Gitt. 70a .. . דברים שלשה ועון דרך פ׳ three things break a man's energies, they are, fear, travel, and sin. B. Bath. 10a שוברו פ׳ קשה גוף a body is strong, fear breaks it; מפיגו יין קשה פ׳ fear is strong, wine drives it out; a. e.

פחדין, פחד׳ m. pl. (פחד, cmp. פחלין) [blown up. balls] testicles. Targ. O. Lev. XXI, 20 (ed. Berl. פחתין); Y. דפחדוי. Targ. Job XL, 17 (Ar. s. v. ותן ed. Koh. פחדוהי, some ed. פחתוהי).
פחה, פי׳ m. (b. h.; = פ׳ בעל, v. Del. Assyr. Handw. p. 519; פחה to be large, cmmp.סגו; cmp. פוש a. נפיש) grandee, high offcer, governor. Y. Bets. IV, 62c (R. Hiya addressing Rab) אחריהם פי׳ בן son of nobility, follow them (the example ot thy kindred) -- Pl שהות. Bicc. III, 3 הסגנים הפ׳ וכ׳ the grandees, the chiefs, and the treasurers (of the Temple) went out to meet them. Num. Rt. s. 14 ; a. e.

פחות m. (פחת) [diminished,] 1) a small quantity. Y. Dem. I, 21a bot. מאכל פחות (not מאוכל) a small quantity of food (corresp. to ib. I, 2 מעוטו). -- 2) (adj. a. adv.) lesser, less. Men. XI, 9 משנים פ׳ אין no less than two days (after being baked); ib. וכ׳ יתר ולא מתשעה פ׳ אין no less than nine days, nor more than eleven; Pes. 47a יותר ולא פ׳ לא no less (than nine), nor more (than eleven). Meg. 21b וכ׳ פ׳ בפרשה משיירין אין in distributing the readings of a Scriptural portion we must leave for the last reader no less than three verses; a. v. fr. --Fem. פחותה. Tosef. Kel. B. Mets.
