Ferdinand Paul Wilhelm von Richthofen
(1833–1905)

Baron; German nobleman, traveller, geographer, and scientist; international authority on geography and geology of China; worked for the U. S. government, discovering gold fields in California (1862-1868). Being a popular professor in several leading German universities (1879-1905), as well as a writer, he coined the term "Silk Road" and standardized the practices of chorography and chorology; also Ferdinand or Baron von Richthofen.
