Text Appearing Before Image:
GERONIMO For two days and three nights we wereon forced marches, stopping only for meals, then we made a camp near the Mexican bor-der, where we rested two days. Here I tooksome food and talked with the other Indianswho had lost in the massacre, but none hadlost as I had, for I had lost all. Within a few days we arrived at our ownsettlement. There were the decorations thatAlope had made—and there were the play-things of our little ones. I burned ^ themall, even our tepee. I also burned my moth-ers tepee and destroyed all her property. I was never again contented in our quiethome. True, I could visit my fathers grave, but I had vowed vengeance upon the Mex-ican troopers who had wronged me, andwhenever I came near his grave or saw any-thing to remind me of former happy daysmy heart would ache for revenge uponMexico. 1 According to custom he should not have kept the prop-erty of his deceased relatives, but he was not compelled todestroy his own tepee or the playthings of his children.46
Text Appearing After Image:
^Part II—Revenge As soon as we had again collected somearms and supplies Mangus-Colorado, ourchief, called a council and found that all ourwarriors were willing to take the warpathagainst Mexico. I was appointed to solicitthe aid of other tribes in this war. When I went to the Chokonen (Chiri-cahua) Apaches, Cochise, their chief, calleda council at early dawn. Silently the war-riors assembled at an open place in a moun-tain dell and took their seats on the ground, arranged in rows according to their ranks.Silently they sat smoking. At a signalfrom the chief I arose and presented mycause as follows: Kinsman, you have heard what the Mex-icans have recently done without cause. You are my relatives—uncles, cousins, brothers. We are men the same as the Mex- 47 H: GERONIMO icans are—we can do to them what they havedone to us. Let us go forward and trailthem—I will lead you to their city—we willattack them in their homes. I will fight inthe front of the battle—I only ask you tofollo
