ake some sugges-tions for his consideration: On the 17th of INIay, 1885, a party ofabout fifty of the Chiricahua prisoners,161 GERONIMO headed by Geronimo, Naiche, and otherchiefs, escaped from the White MountainReserve, in Arizona, and entered upon acareer of murder and robbery unparalleledin the history of Indian raids. Since then, and up to the time of my as-suming command of this division, they hadbeen pursued by troops with varying suc-cess. After the assassination of Captain Craw-ford, on January 11, by the Mexicans, thehostiles asked for a talk, and finally hada conference on March 25, 26, and 27, withGeneral Crook, in the Canon of Los Em-budos, 25 miles south of San Bernardino,Mexico, on which latter date it was arrangedthat they should be conducted by LieutenantManus, with his battalion of scouts, to FortBowie, Ariz. Simultaneously with my taking com-mand of the division Brigadier GeneralCrook was relieved by Brigadier GeneralJMiles, who at once set out to complete thetask commenced by his predecessor. Geronimo and his band were committingdepredations, now in the United States andnow in Mexico, and, being separated intosmall parties, easily eluded the troops, andcarried on their work of murder and out-rage. Early in May General JNIiles organizedthe hostile field of operations into districts,each with its command of troops, with spe-cific instructions to guard the water holes,to cover the entire ground by scouting par-ties, and give the hostiles no rest. An effective command, under Captain 163 GERONIMO Lawton, Fourth Cavalry, was organized fora long pursuit. On May 3 Captain Lebo, Tenth Cav-alry, had a fight with Geronirao
