Text Appearing Before Image:
oon Pilchard came outto him with a white face. Whats the matter ? Swan asked, fullof apprehension. Peele died before youd been gonean hour. We must see to having him buriedat once. Hes underground already. Where well all be if we stay muchlonger. Where I feel as if I ought to be,Pilchard groaned. What dye mean ? I mean that Im about ready to giveup. If it wasnt for you I would giveup. Im as weak as water. I just sawPeele die, and that finished me. Ugh!It was awful! And Pilchard, who certainly was pale, drew a flask from his pocket and took along drink. He seemed to drink to hisown weakness. He seemed to glory inthe fact that he had given up, and thathe knew Swan never would. Swan realized this and looked wearilyacross the swamp they had just covered. It was all his work. A narrow mound ofsolid earth ran back as far as eye couldreach, and on it two shining steel railsglittered in the blazing sun. On either sidelay wet, poisonous ground covered withdeadly growths and exuding fearful odors
Text Appearing After Image:
ILL DO IT! HE EXCLAIMED 210 HAKPEKS MONTHLY MAGAZINE. and devitalizing forces which even theheat could not dissipate. In that noon-day light which burned and burned andmade no impression on the moisture,Swans face was wilted like a white flowerwhich is dead and turning yellow. Hiseyes, too, were like things once living andnow dead. The muscles around hismouth twitched like electric wire. It isnt possible for me to finish italone, he told himself. He knew that hecould finish the job by working bothnight and day, but could he stand thestrain? Had he, after all, a strongerphysique than any other white man hadever had before? He leaned far back asif he were trying to fold himself up,and then bent forward in the same man-ner, trying, with a desperation like death,to relieve the weakness that was numbinghis limbs. He suddenly felt dizzy as helooked at the hot distance where somebig leaves were waving—dizzy as he knewthat he must fail. By God! he exclaimed, striking thepile of dirt. By God
