Across the Continent 35 there have been few more memorable or prophetic scenes thanthat when they took possession of the Pacific Coast in the nameof God and the United States. From Independence Rock an express had been sent forwardannouncing the movements of the caravan and the time it ex-pected to reach the rendezvous. This information reached notonly the trappers and traders but also the Indians, and conse-quently a few of the Nez Perces and Flathead Indians cameon to welcome the missionaries. They met them on the even-ing of the fourth, where they were camped on the Little Sandy,a tributary of Green River, two days before their arrival at therendezvous. Among them were Tak-ken-su-i-tas (Rotten Belly)and Is-holhol-hoats-hoats (Lawyer) with a letter from Mr.Parker. The letter told them of his kind reception by the In-dians, of the arrival of Rev.
