Summary

Description
English: Political cartoon of Charles James Fox (left) and Edmund Burke (right) outside the gates of paradise by James Sayers. On the arch are the heads of Isaac Barré (leftmost), Lord Shelburne (keystone), and John Dunning (rightmost).

"This represents the resignation of Fox and Burke on Shelburne's appointment as First Lord of the Treasury after the death of Rockingham on 1 July, and their chagrin that their example was not followed by more members of the Ministry" (British Museum).

Sourced from Life of William, Earl of Shelburne by Edmond Fitzmaurice (2nd ed., 1912), facing p. 155. Cropped to remove caption and edited for colour balance.
