Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew

A medieval gospel on the nativity and childhood of Jesus dating from the 8th–10th century. Early versions largely adapted the Gospel of James; at some point a larger version compiled with the Infancy Gospel of Thomas was made. It was quite popular in the medieval era and spread across the Latin-speaking Western Church, including translations from Latin into European vernacular languages. The name "Pseudo-Matthew" is a modern term due to the letters claiming the work was a translation by Jerome from a prologue to the gospel of Matthew; it may have been called "The Book of the Infancy" or variants at the time it was popular.
