Stansfeld, Rt. Hon. James, M.P. Halifax since 1859, LL.B. London Univ. 1844, B.A. 1840, and a member of Convocation, civil lord of the admiralty 1863-4, under-secretary of state for India in 1866, third lord of the treasury 1868-9, financial secretary to the treasury 1869-71, president of the Poor Law Board March to Aug., 1871, president of Local Government Board 1871-4, P.C. Feb., 1869, a student of the Inner Temple 31 Oct., 1840 (then aged 20), called to the bar 26 Jan., 1849 (only son of James Stansfeld, of Halifax, county court judge); born 6 March, 1820; married 27 July, 1844, Caroline, 2nd dau. of William Henry Ashurst, Esq., of London, and has issue (see Foster's Yorkshire Collection).
