בדי II, Pa. בדי, בדה (dialect. =בזי) to despise. Cant. R. to VIII, 1 (ref. to לי יבזו לא ibid.; read) מבדה דו לית לי there is none can despise me (for kissing my brother); [Ex. R. s. 5 beg. corrupt].

בדידה, בודידה f. (בדד, v. בד II) small olive press. Sifra B'har ch. I one may grind the olives in the large tank לבד׳ ומכניס and then put them into the small press; Shebi. VIII, 6 לבוד׳. Pl. בדידות. Gen. R. s. 31 Ar. (ed. בדדיות, בדריות, corr. acc.).

בדיחותא f. (v. preced.) cheer. Sabb. 30b דב׳ מלתא something humorous. Ber. 55a ליה מפכחא בדיחותיה its very cheerfulness frustrates it (the good dream).
*בדיניי m. (contr. of דייני בי) prop. court-house, in gen. government's building, public building, treasury. Ber. 56a וכ׳ דמלכא ב׳ ed. (Mss. זיונא בי, בזיונא q. v.) the king's treasury shall be broken into. [Perl. Et. St. p. 25 refers to Pers. divaain which, however, seems of too late an origin for the Talmudic date, v. Cycl. Briit. 9'b ad. s. v. Divan.]
בדיל (comp. of ב, די, a. ל=h. בשל) as to what refers to -- whence; on account of, for the sake of, in order that. Targ. O. Gen. VI, 3; a. e. -- Lev. R. s. 28, end אזל בלנאי ב׳ he went for (the sake of getting) a bather. Y. Kidd. III, 64a וכ׳ יכפור דלא ב׳ in order that he may not deny his owing a cup. Yoma 75b וכ׳ רבא ב׳ (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l.) through the merit of the teacher is the scholar supported. -- בדילי, בדילך &c. on my, thy account &c. Targ. O. Deut. III, 26; a. e. (Y. בגלל; b. h. למען).
בדילה f. (בדל) separation. Tanh. Mishp. 17 ב׳ לשון an expression meaning 'creating a partition'.

בדיקה f. (בדק) search, examination, test. Pes. I, 1. Y. ib. I, beg. 27a ב׳ היום בדיקת search (after leavened bread) made in day -time is a (valid) search. Kil. IX, 7; a. fr. -- Num. R. s. 9 דידיה לב׳ referring to his search; i. e. intimating that the test by the 'bitterwaters (v. סוטה) will also afect him (he adulterer) (Sot. 28a לידיעה). . Pl. בדיקות; esp. cross-examinations of wifnesses as to minor circumstances; v. חקירה. Snh. V, 2 (40a); a. fr.
בדיקותא f. ch. same, esp. examination of slaught- ered animals as to the condition of the lungs &c., v. בדק. Hull. 48a וכ׳ ב׳ להו לית no examination will avail them to make them permitted; (ib. 46a בדיקה להו לית). Ib. 10b וכ׳ ב׳ מצריך declares an examination (of the slaughtering knife) necessary &c.; a. e.
*בדיקנאה m. (v. בדק Pa., end) detective, police offcer. Taan. 22a אנא ב׳ Ms. M. (ed. זנדוקנא, v. זנדוקא). [The description of that offficer's doings proves the correct- ness of the version of Ms. M.]
*בדיתא pr. n. B'ditha, name of a canal of the Euphrates, v. פומבדיתא. M. Kat. 11a כוורי לבאי ב׳ (read בב׳, Alf. בפומבדיתא) in the B'ditha the fish were laid dry. [Var. בריתא, ברייתא, v. Rabb. D. S. a.l. note 300.]
בדל (בד, v. בדד) to separate, divide, distinguish; (neut. v.) בדל to keep aloof. Pes. 87b וכ׳ עצמך בדול with- draw thyself from (touching) her. Y. Hag. II, 78b top התרומה מן בדל שיהא כדי in order that he may be careful in handling T'rummah. B. Mets. 59b it seems to me וכ׳ בדילים שחברים that the colleagues hold themselves aloof from thee (i. e. thou art excommunicated). lIb. 89a בתמרים ב׳ to separate (with a tool) dates which stick together (cmp. Rashi a. l.); Y. Maasr. II, 50a top הבדיל בתמרים (read הבודל). Ber. 5a וכ׳ בדילין יסורין pains will stay away from him; a. fr. Hif. (b. h.) הבדיל 1) to sever, set apart, distinguish. Hull. 21b מבדיל ואינו מולק he nips the bird's neck but must not sever a limb or cut with his nail deeper than required (Lev. I, 17). Ib.
