Pat is a little Indian girl from the Pinoleville Rancheria. Her mother works in the grape harvest with all the other Indians. Pat almost lives on grapes, and they don't seem to be hurting her, and all day she crawls over the large piles of boxes and sometimes she gets a ride on the big truck.

Pat might be called the fruit girl for she lives all summer in the fruit fields; grapes, prunes, pears, and hops, all have to be picked and mother helps pick them, so Pay must go along and live in the field.
