HIEIZAN
The highest mountains is Hiyeizan northeast of Kiyoto.
Near the top of this mountain stands a large old temple Yenrekiji by name.
Yenrekiji was founded by Kanmu Tenno when he made this city his residence.
After centuries the priest of this temple became very powerful and sometimes they feircely fought with other priests and made dreadful slaughter or burnt down other temple.
At one time lived thousands of priests in it.
In the year 1540, they raised war against Shogun Nobunaga and at last they were defeated by him and all the priests were killed and the admirable building was burnt down to the ground.
The present temple is very different from that of the ancient one in both size and splendor.
