Entered Navy, 1869; Lieut.-Commander, 1871; Rear-Admiral, 1882; Vice-Admiral, 1889; created Baron, 1895; Vice-Minister of Navy from 1889 to 1899; created a peer in recognition of service in Chino-Japanese War; Member of House of Peers since 1899. ITO, Admiral, Viscount Sukenori (TOKYO), Chief of Naval General Staff; l>. May 1843, at Satsuma Province; m. 1878, Mitsu-ko Kato. Educ.: Kaisei College, Tokyo; Naval College at the time of Tokugawa. Entered Imperial Japanese Navy, 1868; Lieut.-Commander, 1872; Commanded the " Adzuma " (ex "Stonewall.Jackson"), "Nischin,""Fuso," and "Hiyei" in succession; took part in Civil War of 1877 in command of "Nisshin," and with "Hiyei" went to Persian Gulf, 1880; promoted Captain, 1832; brought the " Naniwa" from England, 1885; Rear-Admiral and Commander of the Standing Squadron. 1888; Vice-Admiral and Chief of Voko.suka Naval Station, 1892; fought at the battle of Yalu with the combined Squadrons under his command, in Chino-Japanese War, 1894; Chief of the Naval General Staff, 1895; created Viscount and Invested with the 1st Order of the Rising Sun, and 2nd Order of the Golden Kite, etc., for services in the War; made full Admiral, 1898.
