Signing members of the Royal Society[edit]

I looked at w:en:List of fellows of the Royal Society to try and identify the signatories. (I only know of Banks, Solander, Cavendish, and Hunter.)

Text Year elected as Fellow Comment
Jos Banks 1766 w:en:Joseph Banks
Matt Raper. 1754 w:en:Matthew Raper (Jr), astronomer and scholar, d. 1788.
Dan. Solander 1764 w:en:Daniel Solander, botanist, travelled with Cook and Banks on Cook's first voyage.
S Horsley 1767 w:en:Samuel Horsley, Bishop, physicist, and mathematician. Withdrew from Fellowship 1784.
Mulgrove There is w:en:Samuel Musgrave, elected 1760, d. 1780. But the letter in the sig. really looks like an “l” not a long “s”.
John Reinold Forster 1772 w:en:Johann Reinhold Forster, “naturalist on James Cook's second Pacific voyage“.
Seaforth
Jno Campbell
(illegible text)Blagden 1772 w:en:Charles Blagden

C. Morton 1752 w:en:Charles Morton (librarian)
David Wray There is a Fellow named w:en:Daniel Wray, elected 1729, d. 1783.
H. Cavendish 1760 w:en:Henry Cavendish
(illegible text) Shepherd Stephens 1771 There was a Fellow of the time, w:en:Richard Shepherd (theologian), though the sig. doesn’t look like an abbreviation for “Richard”. w:en:Sir Philip Stephens, 1st Baronet. “He was a friend of Captain James Cook and the Pacific atoll of Caroline Island is named for his daughter. Stephens Island in British Columbia and Port Stephens in New South Wales were named for him.” The signature could be “Ph.p Stephens” if you squint at it the right way.
J. (illegible text)uthbert 1765 probably John Cuthbert, barrister
John Hunter 1767 w:en:John Hunter (surgeon)
James Burron 1737 probably w:en:James Burrow, d. 1782
Alex.r Aubert 1772 w:en:Alexander Aubert
JLloyd 1774 w:en:John Lloyd, naturalist, barrister, and MP.
Robert Mylne 1767 w:en:Robert Mylne, architect and engineer.
N. Maskelyne 1758 w:en:Nevil Maskelyne, Astronomer Royal.
(illegible text) Duane. 1763 probably w:en:Matthew Duane, conveyancer and art dealer.
Ant.o Shepherd 1763 w:en:Anthony Shepherd, astronomer. “... a friend of Captain Cook, who named the w:en:Shepherd Islands after him.”

I'll add to the comments column soon. Pelagic (talk) 02:42, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Added more names. Pelagic (talk) 03:08, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Added column for year elected. Added details for Forster, Mylne, Maskelyne, Stuart, Wray. I'm fairly confident about the “C”s in Blagden and Cuthbert. For Mat. Duane vs. Mal Duane we might need to mark as reconstructed? Armed with a posteriori knowledge, Wray's sig. looks more like “Daniel” than “David” to me. Pelagic (talk) 09:34, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Updated Horsley, Stephens, Raper in table. Have also updated some names on the content page. Pelagic (talk) 10:53, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
