AMHERST, Mass., a town in Hampshire County, on the Boston & Maine and the Central Vermont railroads, 23 miles northeast of Springfield. It has manufactories of paper, straw and palm-leaf hats and leather, and is best known as the seat of Amherst College (q.v.), the State Agricultural College and the State Experiment Station. Pop. (1916), 5,300.
