The Magic City (1906)
by E. Nesbit, illustrated by H. R. Millar
A thoroughly bored Philip, alone in his stepsister's house, entertains himself by building a giant model city of game pieces, books, and other odds and ends lying around the place. Suddenly—magically—he finds himself inside the city: and the city is alive! Magical may be his coming—but his "welcoming committee" do not appear so thrilled.

The novel initially appeared as a serial in The Strand Magazine, with illustrations by Spencer Pryse. A free audiobook is available at [Librivox]
