MISH'MIS. The natives of the Mishmi Hills in the valley of the Brahmaputra in Northeastern India. By language they are related to the adjacent peoples of Indo-China (Chins, Shans, Lushai, etc.). These primitive tribes are very interesting from a sociological point of view. Among them the custom that the favorite child (without respect to age) inherits prevails. The marriage customs are also peculiar. Consult: Cooper, The Mishmee Hills (London, 1873); Dalton, Descriptive Ethnology of Bengal (Calcutta, 1872).
