William Long|1817|1886| William Long (born 1817 died 1886), antiquary, born 15 August 1817, was second son of Walter Long of Corhampton, Hampshire, by Lady Mary, eldest daughter of William Carnegie, seventh earl of Northesk. He matriculated from Balliol College, Oxford, 5 June 1835, graduated with a BA in 1839, and gained an MA in 1844. He was a justice of the peace for Somerset, an F.S.A., and passed his life as a country gentleman and a local antiquary. He died, 14 April 1886, at Onslow Gardens, London. He married, 13 April 1841, Elizabeth Hare, only child of James Hare Joliffe, and left issue.

Publications

He wrote:

1. 'Abury Illustrated', Devizes, 1858, octavo.
2. 'Stonehenge and its Burrows', Devizes, 1876, octavo, a valuable monograph.
