toolbar buttons

[edit]
  • still now currently can't see any some toolbar buttons (strikeout indicates currently visible):
  • standard menu:
      • bold
      • italic
      • External link
      • Internal link
      • Embedded File
      • Reference
      • Signature and timestamp
    • Proofread tools
      • zoom in
      • zoom out
      • Original size
      • Show/hide headers/footers
      • Vertical/horizontal layout
      • OCR
    • Advanced menu:
      • bulleted list
      • numbered list
      • no wiki formatting
      • new line
      • big
      • small
      • superscript
      • subscript
      • Picture gallery
      • Table
      • Redirect

Note: many of these items are available in the Insert or Wiki markup areas of the box below the edit box, so I'm just talking about toolbar buttons, and none of it is urgent since tooltips are still available.

backgrounds (transparent or forced color)

[edit]
  • Some pages show tables with a bright background and light-colored text, very bright and very hard for me to read. I think this problem is new (since Sep 2 or so), since I am pretty sure (though not 100% certain) that I used the DNB page without a problem before.
    • Examples:
      • DNB
      • Harper's
      • {{float left}} (the documentation page)
      • the "thank this user" popup dialog (this one's definitely new since the previous time had I thanked someone). Details:
        • top of box: gray background, no text, x in corner
        • middle of box: lighter gray background, text ("Do you want") is light gray
        • bottom of box: transparent (can see what's behind it), green (opaque) box with light gray text for "OK" and like middle of box for "Cancel" (opaque).
  • Since Sep 1 or 2: Notifications dropdown background is transparent, making it hard to read fixed 6 Sep.
  • The "your edit was saved" popup is still (as of 6 Sep) transparent.
  • New 6 Sep: background for notifications numeral at top of page ("0", "1", etc.) is light gray. (The dropdown when clicking on it is fine; it's just the number, and doesn't even need to be changed since it's so small, but I mention it for troubleshooting the table problem.)

odd things I've noticed

[edit]
  • can use the "More" drop-down menu (next to the search box) and the Watchlist star next to it here; can't on Commons or Wikipedia (may resolve when I copy this to global.css at mw)
  • (not here) left-side list of links and tools covers a short vertical strip of the article text and/or the edit box (haven't noticed it here, but definitely on Wikipedia, can't remember if on Commons; disappears when browser window is wide enough; may resolve when I copy this to global.css at mw)

also can't see

[edit]
  • logos (top left, not only here but on all projects) (don't really care much, just noting it for completeness and troubleshooting)
  • rules and custom rules (lines) (cannot even see the examples) (not sure I want this fixed unless I can easily toggle it on and off just to check them, because bright strips of white would be hard on my eyes, so this is probably more trouble than it's worth to fix)

Question for later: are there any WS-specific tweaks that would not cross projects well when copied to global.css at wm?

See GlobalCssJs extension and Meta-Wiki page. Create: global.js, global.css; may need to create account first.

wishlist

[edit]

I would like to have redlinks colored light orange. They are currently white, indistinguishable from other links (normal links are also white). (Red and blue against black are hard to read.)

Update: After Mr. Orwell added !important, the links were red. They were marked with #ff0000 (red). I changed the color code, and the links were still red. I changed the color code again, and now the links are white again. 14:00, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
Done! Yay! 6 September 2014 (will play with color later, remembering to watch out for ## copy/paste mistake)

Visited links are bold and require no change.

Low priority: On pages in the Index and Page namespaces, the background colors are now (correctly, as I originally requested) showing through (instead of being overridden by my black background, as they were before I asked for help). The text is still "my" light color, though, and so it is a little hard to read. Would it be possible to make the text for these items (and their links) black?

thanks

[edit]

Many thanks to George Orwell III for his help in tweaking this css.

Someday soon I will copy it to global.css on mw!

No worries.

As for the "missing" buttons listed above, some of them are due to transparent background/all-black-foreground issues and some others are because of various enhancements and/or bugs that are in-between deployments at the moment is all. For instance, at some point on Tuesday of this week, issues preventing the classic toolbar from appearing in the Page namespace and a few other toolbar issues "should" (& I stress should) be resolved and we can look into things further at that point.

The other "problem" with addressing these now rather than later, is the expected pruning of all the skin components from the core code once and for all - possibly opening up other avenues in "rectifying" this to pursue instead. Give things a chance to settle a bit so hit me back a week from this Tuesday the 2nd so I don't forget all about it. Prost. -- George Orwell III (talk) 01:37, 2 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

@George Orwell III: I am sorry you thought this was directed at you! It was mostly a note to myself to keep track of it all for future improvements. The missing buttons are mostly workable because of the tooltips—"if" I know they are there! So I wanted a list I could consult, to make sure I wasn't missing any when I forget later. And maybe to pursue making some custom buttons for myself someday.
But it's good to know that there is some development/maintenance going on that will improve some things. There are several other things I cannot see because of black-on-black: the main logo (top left) and rules come to mind. I also had a major problem on Commons and Wikipedia that the "More" drop-down menu didn't work and I had to use the "tabify Vector" gadget/setting to get around it-- once I figured out that was what the problem was. I'm not having that problem here and it might be something you fixed!  :) Thank you for all your help! Laura1822 (talk) 12:06, 2 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, when I wrote the above, I clicked on the wrong thing (three curly braces), and so the ping didn't work. Since then, I've reorganized the page somewhat and added other items. Again, none of this is directed specifically at you, though I'm immensely grateful for whatever help you can give me. Laura1822 (talk) 16:51, 4 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Gotcha. I've added hidden notes to most of the settings in your .css to try to explain what each section "controls" - hope these will help us refine things moving forward; please give them a look over (the reason for the absence and subsequent re-alignment of the 'More' drop-down menu tab here on WS is better illuminated for example).

The thing about red-links showing up again was it needed the !important caveat (as you've already surmised) but I'm not exactly sure why we can't change the color to something more appealing. I know its possible because when I use a "commonly defined" color - such as the term 'lime' - instead, the font color changes to neon green lime alright. I just think we haven't found a suitable hexadecimal/defined color that agrees with what amounts to a grayscale color scheme is all. I'll keep looking for a solution but in the meantime feel free to experiment on your own on that one. UPDATE: you had 2 ## in the hexadecimal color string and I kept missing that until now. See if anything has changed now that its corrected.

::::insert "redfaced emoticon" here. —L.

The thing about tables, in general, is that most of them use a pseudo-wiki-wide, universal color scheme defined as the 'wikitable' or 'prettytable' class. Since this class is so widely used here & on other projects, they would need to be overridden with your own style(s) in your .css - each parameter needing the !important string to successfully override these "system-wide" defaults.

I haven't looked over all your recent changes above just yet but I'm still curious about one thing - are you saying the drop down menus in the WikiEditor toolbar still show "bright" backgrounds with black text in All the namespaces including the Page: namespace? Its not clear to me what/how exactly the drop down menus differ from the straight buttons on that toolbar. -- George Orwell III (talk) 00:45, 6 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

My goodness, I can't thank you enough!
The "More" dropdown I was talking about isn't in the editor: it's the one at the top of the page next to the search box. On Commons (and I think on Wikipedia) I simply didn't see it, or the star next to it for the Watchlist, and moving my mouse around in that area didn't produce anything clickable. I only realized this when I was trying to figure out where the "Move" tab had gone. (And on those sites there was a setting or gadget that "tabified" those links so that I could see them again.) I think I was just noting that something you did changed that behavior here, but at this point I'm not absolutely certain that it was something you did. It may have worked here on WS for me from the beginning. I'm sorry I can't remember exactly, and sorry for the confusion.
I looked through your explanations in the css and I'm so grateful. As I'm sure you could tell from the mess in there, I was just copying/pasting things from elsewhere, working entirely by trial and error, stumbling around in the dark (so to speak). Feel free to clean it up all you like.
I was afraid that "prettytable" might be the problem. But it was puzzling to me since they used to be "normal".
I'll continue to leave feedback as I have so far. Haven't checked everything out yet. Laura1822 (talk) 12:20, 6 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
