This hymn is a translation of the German "Beim frühen Morgenlicht", first published in Katholisches Gesanglruch (1828). Caswall's translation first appeared in Catholic Hymns, 1853, with the title May Jesus Christ be praised!. It is usually sung to the tune "Laudes Domini" by Joseph Barnby, written as a setting for this hymn in 1868.
