Banarji, Albion Rajkumar, M.A., I.C.S., C.I.E., Diwan of Cochin State, was born in England on 10th October, 1871, and educated at Calcutta, and at Balliol College, Oxford. His father, Babu Sasipada Banarji, was a well-known social reformer. His mother was one of the first high-caste Indian ladies to visit England. Mr. Banarji joined the Indian Civil Service, after examination, in December 1895, and served in the Madras Presidency as Assistant Magistrate and Collector; he rose to the grade of Head Assistant in October 1904, and in May 1907 his services were lent to the Cochin Durbar, where he took up the post of Diwan, which he has held with great credit ever since. During Mr. Banarji's tenure of office many administrative reforms have been carried out, and the revenue of the State has increased from 32 to 43 lakhs per annum. His title was conferred on the occasion of the recent Coronation Durbar in recognition of his great services to the State and the public generally. Address: Trichur, Cochin.
