In this book, Midshipman James Morris Morgan (author) is under direct command of Captain William Lewis Maury aka Captain Maury. Not to have the relatives be confused within this work, the commodore, or "the great lieutenant", or Commodore Maury refers to Matthew Fontaine Maury, an uncle of William Lewis Maury.

In other books Matthew Fontaine Maury is sometimes called captain, commodore, or lieutenant but so are several other family members and all are related with several being in the U.S. Navy of the past and of the present. The Maury family is an extensive family that "stayed in touch" through many generations including to-date. The names are often used many times over through generations. An easy example as shown in this book is when the commodore's "little son" is mentioned. His name was "Matthew Fontaine Maury Jr."—Maury (talk) 21:36, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
