*REALISTS, a party of the schoolmen, who conceive that universals are realities, and have an existence-a parte rei; whereas the nominalists conceive of them only as ideas existing in the mind. Under the denomination of Realists were comprehended the Scotists and Thomists, and all other sects of schoolmen, except the followers of Ocham. Among school-divines the term has been used to distinguish the orthodox Trinitarians, from the sects accounted heretical.[1]
