עבורא m. (עבר) passer-by, traveller. Y. Taan. IV, 69a bot, לע׳ מקבלין הוו דלא they would receive no stranger (Lam. R. to II, 2 אכסניא). -- Pl. עבוריא. Targ. Y. Gen. XVIII, 3 (ed. Vien. עיבוריא, corr. acc.).

עבות f. (b. h. עבת; עבת to twist, plait) network, mat- ting; ע׳ ען a tree screened by a network of foliage. Sifra. Emor, Par. 12, ch. XVI (expl. Lev. XXIII, 40) שענף את לקליעה דומה עצו the tree the ramificatuon around whose trunk resembles plaiting; Y. Succ. III, 53c bot. שענפיו ען קליעה... חופין a ttree tthe branches of which cover its larger portion and which rises in the shape of a plaiting; Bab. ib. 32b עצו את חופין שענפיו whose branches cover up its trunk. Ib. וכ׳ ע׳ דמי היכי what is aboth like (when is a. tree called aboth) When three leaves are on each stem. Ib. קיימת עבותו שתהא ובלבד provided its network (three leaves on each stem) remains; a. e.
עבות m. (b. h.; preced.) chain, rope for fastening the yoke of the animal to the plough (Maim.); [the pole tied to the yoke by means of a knotted rope (R. S.)]. Kel. XXI, 2. עבט, v. כביט.
זבט (denom. of עביטא, v. עבוט) to scize a pledge. Ithpe. איעבט to have one's goods seieed. B. Kam. 113b מיבבט מתא אבר מתא בר the goods of one resident may be seized for the delinquent taxes of a fellow resident (v. תפס).
עבי, עבה (b. h.; cmp. עבב) to be thick, dense, dark. lif. נעבה to become thick, swell. Tanh. Vaera 3 ובלען וב׳ רותר ׳ ולא . . Aaron's staff swallowed them up and yet was not thicker than before. Hif. העבה same. Tosef. Kil. III, 4 מכוונות ונעשו העבו (not העבן) if the plants on growing denser appeared to form a straight line; Y. ib. V, beg. 29d העבות (R. S. to Kil. V, 1 עבים היו; corr. acc.). PPi. עיבה to make thick; to condense, darken; to facili- tate growth. Y. Taan. III, 66c מעבה, vv. עב II. M. Kat. II, 5 מעבין אף. .. מהתפין (during the festive week) you may cover up the cut figs with straw . . . you may even &c.; expl. ib. 13b אסמוכי מעבין אקלושי מחפין by m'happin is meant a loose covering, by m'abbin a dense, packed covering; (anoth. opin.) כרי כמין . . מע׳ .. מחפין m'happin means a. loose or a dense covering, m'abbin means bringing the figs lose together so as tto form a pile. Y. Peah III, 17a להדל מנת על בשעי׳ if he set the plants close together with the intention of thinning them afterwards. Ib. VII, 20b וכ׳ מעבן שהוא מתוך because he strengthens the remaining plants (by thinning the ield), tthey produce more fruit tthe next year (and thus he benefits also the poor). Y. Shebi. צבי m. (preced.) thick, rough. Hull. 79a וכ׳ קליה ע׳ if the voice of a mule is rough, its dam is an ass, if shrill (צניף), a horse.

*עביא m. (עבי) cover, concealment. Targ. Y. II Ex. XIX, 9 (Y. I a. O. עיבא; h. text עב). -- Y. Taan. II, 65b top (expl. ויעבתוה, Mic. VII, 3) וכ׳ קליעה עבדוה ע׳ עבדוה they make it (their speech) a cover, they malke it a screen for pheir guilty acts (cmp. עבות).

עביט m. (עבט, v. עבוט; cmp. חבט I) [fastening, press- ing,] 1) (גמל של) sumpter-saddle consisting of a pair of panniers tied across the animal's back (Loat. clitellae, Gr. zout~a~); also the cushion on the camel's back (Arab. gabit). X, end 7 מיני עביטיך שרי את ליה מימר יכיל he (who has been forced to pay his neighbor's arrear taxes) can say to him, take thy saddle off me, i. e. p6y me the amount you would have had to pay the govern- ment. Bab. ib. 11 5a עביטך שרי זיל. . אל he said to that man (whose stolen goods had been bought in good faith), go, untie thy saddle, i. e. redeem thy goods by indem- nifying the buyer.
