אוטם m. (אטם) 1) obstruction; something closed, plugged up. Hull. 47b בריאה א׳ Ar. (ed. אטום) an obstruc- tion in the lungs, a spot imperviable to air when blown up. Ohol. VI, 5 we regard the levitical uncleanness be- tween the rafters א׳ הוא כאילו as if it was locked up (and could not affect what is in the house). -- 2) sub- structure (flled with earth), foundation. Mid. IV, 6. Par. III, 6.

אוי, אוה I (b. h., אב=או, cmp. אבה), Pi. איוה to desire, covet. Snh. 63a וכ׳ אלוהות איו (Ab. Zar. 53b לאלוהות, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 8) they had a desire for many deities. Denom. תאוה. Cmp. אות. Hithpa. התאוה(bb. h.), Nithpa. נתאוה (denom. of תאוה) to desire, to be seiged with a desire. Num. R. s. 10 (play on יתאדם Prov. XXIII, 31) the drunken man וכ׳ לדם והkות will covet blood (forbidden intercourse). Gen. R. s. 51. Ex. R. s. 24, end. -- Num. R. s. 2 וכ׳ מתאוים התחילו they began to express a desire for standards (in imitation of the angelic hosts). Ib. divide them into standards שנתאוו כמו as they desired.
אוי, אוה II (b. h., אה, cmp. הא; v. חוה, a. Ges. H. Dict. . v. אוה III) to point, mark. Denom. אות II, תאי, תאוה. Hithpa. התאוה (denom. of תאוה, תאו) to mark, to mark out. Koh. R. to XII, 7 תאוים מתאוה התחיל he began to put up marks.
אוי m. (v. אוי I) [pressure] woe, sorrow. Gen. R. s. 46 אוי לא בי there is no (cause for) woe with me. Num. R. s. 10 (play on dboy, Prov. XXIII, 29) אוי אב father of woe. -- 2) interj. woe alas Kel. XVII, 16; a. v. fr.

אויר, אויר m. (אור; cmp. רוח a. רוח); space corresp. to חלל, esp. 1) open, empty space, blank. Ohol. IV, 1 a. tower בא׳ שעומד standing isolated. Ib. XVIII, 10 אוירה חצר של the open space in the court-yard. -- B. Bath. 163a. -- 2) (cmp. b. h. מאורה) hollow, cavity of a vessel. Kel. II, 1 בא׳ ומטמאין מיתטמאין become unclean and make unclean by contact with the hollow (of the vessel). -- Yeb. 67b העולם לא׳ נפק came forth into the lighted space of the world, i e. was born; a. fr. - 3) (cmp. (ךp, aer) air, atmophere, climate, weather. Num. R. s. 14 שממנו הא׳ וכ׳ (as one of the elements of nature) out of which the wind was made. -- Gen. R. s. 34 יפה א׳ fine weather; a. fr. -- Pl. אוירין blank spaces in writings. B. Bath. 16a. -- אוירות climates. Gen. R. s. 34 לא׳ נתלקה ברית a covenant has been made in favor of climates, i. e.
