אוסמנא m. p. אוסמניא (חסם=אסם II) [the glistening.] surname of an Egyptian tribe. Targ. Ps. LXVIII. 32 (Var. חוסמניא, a. אוכמנא the dark.). Cmp. LXX c~muי~ap, for כסלחים; Gen. X, 14; v. Fiirst. H. Dict. s. v. כסלח; Ges. H. Dict. s. v. חשם.

אוסקניתא, סקוניתא f. (נסק; cmp. מסקנא) ascend- ing, landing. דא׳ גמלא landingg board. Snh. 67b וקם דא׳ אג׳ Ar. (ed. דוסקנ׳ ג׳ וקם read with Rashi דסקוכ׳, Ms. M. איסקניתא, oth. var. v. Rabb. D. S. a. l.) and he found himself standing on a landing board (ed. and there stood before him &c.).
אוף I (=אף) too, also. (Yer. Dial.). Targ. Y. Num. XVI, 13; a. fr. -- Y. Dem. I, beg. 21c הכא א׳ here too.
אוף II m. nature, v. אופי.
אופי, אופיי f. pl. (=עפי Dan. IV, 9; cmp. b. h. ענף, a. איבא, אנבא) branches, esp. dry twigs, spray-wood.. Ber. 44b פרסייתא א׳ twigs of Persian trees. Hull. 11005a דא׳ פתכא Ar. (ed. אופיי) a bundle of twigs. B. Mets. 30b. Git. 61a אופיי שדי (Ar. אופי) threw twigs down (which he cut otf), and dates fell off (v. Tossaf. a. l.).
אופי f. (אוף m.) (b. h. אפים; v. אפא; cmp. אוף I) face, looks, whence, nature, disposition, ways &c. Y. Shek. I, 45d וכ׳ של א׳ על לעמוד יכול אתה אין You cannot understand the nature of that people. Lev. R. s. 30 דוד של אופו Ar. ed. Koh. (ed. pr. אופי, ed. אפו) David'e ways. Y'lamd. Vaethh. (quot. in Ar.) 'who is that nation' אלוהיה של אופו יודעת שהיא Ar. ed. Koh. (oth. ed. אופי) that knows the ways of her God (what he desires &c.); v. Yalk. Deut. 825. -- Gen. R. s. 14 end הא׳ זו נשמה n'shamah (breath, soul) means the disposition, character, as people say טבא האופיתא the good nature .
אופיא (הופיא) f. (אוף; v. אנף; b. h. אפע) what is blown off, foam, froth. Ab. Zara 26a דימא א׳ כי Ms.. M. (ed. דנהרא, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l., a. Ar. ed. Koh. s. v. אפי) as the foam of the Sea [river]; (Ar. as logs on the river, v. אופתא, אופי). Ib. 70b א׳ נקיטא הוות (Var. חופיא, ה׳, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 20) she took the froth off.. Hull. 105b א׳ (Ar. ה׳).
*אופיון m. (~~~~) poppy-juice, opium. Y. Ab. Zar. II, 40d top סכנה א׳ אהן an opiumm drink (prepared by a. gentile) is dangerous.

אופיכא (אופכייא f.) (אפך) destruction, ruin Lam. R. to III, 13 (expl. אשפתו בני ibid., v. אשמה) אופיכיה בני (Var. אופכייה) the chillren of those he laid in ruins; v. אימרייא. [Differ. in Esth. R. to I 1b, v. אוכייפא a. אמוריא.]

*אופימטטאטא, אופימשט׳, read אופומנימאטא m. pl. (bxolv~ ~t~) public records, acts. Ex. R. s. 28 a king wanted וכ׳ חון א׳ לעשות to pass acts without con- sulting the lieutenant governor (hyparch).
אופיקילין m. pl. (officialis, ~~~~~~~~~) subord- inate officials, constables. Y'lamd. Balak (quot. in Ar. s. v. בלש) או׳ ed. Koh. Ib. אפיקלין שלח (corr. acc.) he sent constables (for her son).
אופיתא f. ch. (=h. אופי) nature, disposition. Gen. R. s. 14, end, v. אופי.

אופל m. (b. h. אפל) darkness. Gen. R. s. 89, beg. v. אפילה.
אופן m. (b. h.; אפן, פן, v. פנה) 1) wheel. 2) (with ref. to Ezek. I, 1b) pr. n. (fan, name of an angel. Hag. 1b. . Pl. אופנים. Ib. 12b. R. Hash. 24b. - [In liturgic iterature אופנים and אופן are used as the names of a. section of the morning prnyers; v. אופנא.]
אופן m. (b. h. אפן; v. foreg.) turn, method, plan. [In ater Hebr.] method of interpretationc=פניס.] - Pl. אופנים; Du. אופניים. Ruth. R. s. 2, beg. You will soon find out וכ׳ שלהם אופניים (Yalk. Josh. 7 אופנים) their plaos (strategic movemments). Ab. d'R. Nath. (ed. Taussig, N'veh Shal. p. 12) אופניו על in its proper way.
אופנא ch. =h. אופן. - Pl. אופניא. Targ. Ezek. X, 13. -- אופנייה that section of the morning prayers beginning with v'haofannim and describing the angelic praises. Y. Ber. V, 9m bot.
אופנא ch. =אופן. turn, interpretation, qualification. Y. Dum. VI, 25b bot. לסתמא לית א׳ לון לית א׳ we do not recognize an interpretation (of an agreement, so as to say, וכ׳ כאומר נעשה 'it means as though tthey had said--); no qualification is admissible for an unqualified agreement.
אופסים m. du. (cmp. אפס-, a. פס, פסה) palms of the hand. Mekh. B'shall. Vayissa, s. 3, to Ex. XVI, 12 the Mannah came down וכ׳ האו׳ על on the hands of the Lord, as if it were to say, the Lord held forth &c. [In some ed. אופסין.]

אופתא f. (v. אופי) prop. the large central branch, hence trunk, stak. Succ. 32a א׳ ואימא may I not say (as you insist on the palm branch being kafuth, tied. joined) that I must use the stalk--- Hull. 47b lungs uesembling לא׳ a tronk (in color, touch &c.). Ib. 16a אא׳ דבתיב וbור a Vav. written on a trunk (beine broken on account of the rough surface=ille.talk).
