אחי, אחה (חו, cmp. חבב) to unite. Part. pass. אחוי united. Num. R. s. 13, beg. אצלו אחויים שיהיו they shall be united with him (around his table). Pi. איחה to join; to sew together (with fine stitches); cmp. חוט; חוד I. Gen. R. s. 39 beg. וכ׳ את שא׳ אברהם Abraham who united all mankind into a brotherhood (by the belief in one God), וכ׳ מאחה שהוא כזה like one who sews &c., v. infra. Ex. R. s. 40, end. -- Esp. to mend, by stitching, the rent of the garment torn in mourning. M. Kat. 22b; a. fr. Ib. 26a לאחותן to stitch them together. Hithpa. a. Nithpa. התאחה, נתאחה 1) to be joined; to be stitched together. Num. R. s. 13, beg. (play on אחותי Cant. V, 1) וכ׳ לי נתאחו they were joined to me ( joined them) in the captivity. Gen. R. s. 68 מתאחות, v. אבן. M. Kat. 26a מתאחין אין must not be stitched together. -- 2) to be joined by grafing, to grow together. Y. Kil. I,. 27a top וכ׳ נתא׳ הן they (the two seeds) combine. Y. Shebi. אחי ch., Pa. אחי as foreg. Pi. Targ. Koh. III, 7 לאחאה to sew together. אחיד 1) part. pass. of אחד q. v. -2) (=h. מיוחד, v. יחד) singled out, devoted, betrothed. Targ. O. Lev. XIX, 20. Targ. Ps. CXIV, 2. Targ. Cant. VI, 9. אחידה I (אחד) taking possession, capture. Meg. 6a צור מגדל אחידת אותו קורין היו Ms. (ed. שיר, Ar. שד) they recorded the act (of taking the place afterwards called Caesarea) as the capture of Migdal Tsor.

אחיה (b. h.) pr. n. m. Ahiyah, several men of var- ious periods. 1) Shek. V, 1 הנסכים על א׳ A. superintendent of the Temple libations (wines, oils). -- 2) Ber. 63b A., a Babylonian scholar opposing Palestine authorities. -- 3) אחייה רבי R. A., a Tannai. M. Kat. 20a; a. e. Ibid.b וכ׳ לחוד חייא ר׳ R. Hiya (although a Chald. abbreviation of Ahiyah) and R. A. are two different persons.

אחיותא f. (חיי) reanimation, resurrection. Targ. Hos. VI, 2 . . . אחיות resurrection of &c.; a. e.

אחינית f., pl. אחיניות (prob. to be read אחוניות, v. אחונייא) plums. Y. Dem. II, 22d top.
*אחלה f. (חלל) defilement of a priest's daughter, v. חללה. Soh. 66b וכ׳ אחלתה תחלת אם if her first defilement occurred inwhoredom (not inwedlockwith one degraded).
*אחמיתא f. (cmp. h. חמת) pot, closed vessel. Pl. אחמיתין. Targ. Esth. I, 4.
אחמר m. (חמר) ruby, name of a jewel in the High- priest's breast-plate. Targ. Cant. V, 14; v. סמקן.

אח״ס, בט״ע אח״ס, a formula representing a per- mutation of letters wherein the first (א) interchanges with the eighth (ה) and with the fifteenth (ס); the second (ב) with the ninth (ט) and with the sixteenth (ע), &c. Sabb. 104a גי״ף בט״ע שבעטו==אחס מפני עליהם חם אני בגיל I shall spare them because they resisted sensual temptations; v. גיף.
אחסנא, אחסנתא f. (חסן) property, inheritance. Targ. Lev. XIV, 34; a. e. -- B. Bath. 133b א׳ עבורי who unlawfully pass an inheritance from one hand to another.
אחר (b. h.; denom. of אחור) 1) to be behind, v. Pi. -- 2) (euphem.) to cover (of camels). B. Bath. 93a; Shebu. 34a; Snh. 37b (Ms. M. B. Bath. l. c. יהיר). Tosef. B. Kam. III, 6 אוחיר. Pi. אחר, איחר to tarry, hesitate; to set behind. Pes. IX, 9 אחרתי אם if I should be late. Y. Yoma III, 40c top מעשה בו א׳ the text orders a later action after it. Y. Ned. X, 42ab בעמידה א׳ he tarried in standing, i. e. was the last to sit down. Gen. R. s. 81, beg. נדרו את אדם א׳ if one procrastinates the fulfillment of his vow; a. fr. Pu. (and Hoff) אוחר, הואחר to be postponed, be done late, be placed later. Y. Yoma III, 40c top מאוחר בכלל היה would belong to things to be done later.
