אחר (b. h.; v. foreg.), pl. constr. אחרי after, behind. Gen. R. s. 44 wherever the Bible uses the preposition ahare סמוך, it means in connection with, מופלג אחר while ahar means without connection (later on). Yoma 6a א׳ אחר after 'after', i. e. some time after the act, opp. אחר חד one'after', iiimmediately, v. אותיוס. - לאחריו, לאחריה, מאחריו, מאחריה after it, as concluding, opp. לפניה, לפניו introductory (prayer). -- Ber. I, 4 לא׳ אחת one benediction after the Sh'ma. Ib. III, 4 לאחריו (prayer) after meal; a. fr. - יד כלאחר as if doing a thing with the back of the hand, i. e. in a manner different from the usual way of doing it. Sabb. 153b; a. fr. -- מאחרר 1) (conj. followed by שי or די) after, since, whereas, because. Hull. 29a ששנינו מא׳ after it has once been stated in the Mishnah .. . . wwhy was it necessary() &c. Ib.b וכ׳ דאפי׳ ומאחר and since it is not even rabbinically unfit, why &c.; a. fr. -- 2) a legal term, meahar, the presumption of the truth of one's statemment, because he might have pleaded more profitably, if he had been inclined to lie. VI, 36d bot. וכ׳ מאחר מא׳ בממון אומרים אין in money matters we do not apply the principle of meaher, so as to say that because he might have said 'thou hast not lent me anythinf, he may say, thou didst lend me, but I paid half of it' (and his plea must be accepted without an oath); v. מיגו s. v. גו. - אחריך thy successor. Y. Kil. IX, 32c top וכ׳ א׳ בני יהודהmy son Judah shall succeed thee, none else (is worthy). אחר m. (b. h.; v. foreg. a. חורי) [back of,] another, the other, stranger. א׳ דבר (abbr. ד״א) 1) another thing, another explanation. Snh. IV, 5; a. v. fr. in Midr. -- 2) euphem. for idolatry, swine &c., v. דבר. 3) Aher, [apostate,] byname of Elisha ben Abuyah. Hag. 14b; a. e. . Pl. אחרים others; 1) freq. in Mishn. for anonymous authorities differingiin opinion, אומרים א׳, v. Hor. 13b אסיקו א׳ מאיר לר׳ R. Mer is quoted under the word aherim. --- 2) freq. for strangers, gentiles. Snh. 52b א׳ אשת the wife of a non lsraelite. B. Mets. 111b; a. fr. -- Fem. אחרת. אחראי, אחריי m. (foreg. wds.) prop. designated to step behind, substitute; hence, he who (or that which) is gone back to, obligated, pleddged; suretty, guarantor. --- Pl. אחראים, אחריין. Dem. III, 5 וכ׳ א׳ אנו אין we aru not responsible for deceivers. Pes. IX, 9 לזה זה אחראין אינן they are not responsible to oneanother (naed not care for each other). Y. Keth. VIII, end, 32b, a. fr. א׳ נכסיו כל all his landed property is pledged for &c.
אחרון m., אחרונה f. (אחרונית f. noun) other, next, last. Meg. 21b; a. fr. א׳ the last of those called up to read from the Torah. - Pl. אחרונים m., אחרונות f -- א׳ מים the washing of hands after meals before grace, Opp. ראשונים מים washihg before meals. Ber. 53b; a. fr. -- א׳ דורות or only אחרונים the latter (present) generation, opp. ראשונים ancients. Yoma 9b; a. fr. - Ber. 13a צרות וכ׳ א׳ the latter (present) troubles bring the former into oblivion. -- א׳ (ברכות) the three last sections in the Prayer ofBenedictions. אחריות f. (v. אחראי) surety, esp. mortgaged prop- erty, or property which may be resorted to in case of non-payment (even if sold). -- א׳ להן שיש נכסים property from which debts may eventually be collected (landed property), א׳ להם שאין נ׳ property which cannot be re- sorted to (movable property). Kid. I, 5; a. fr. -- B. Mets. III, 11 באחריותן חייב is responsible for them (if lost). Men. 109a; a. fr. נכסים־ א׳ an obligation for which pro- perty is pledged. Keth. 34b; a. fr. --Ib. 51b, a. e. documents נ׳ א׳ בהן שאין in which the clause pledging property is omitted. Ib.a; a. e. הוא סופר טעות א׳ the omission of the clause pledging property is considered as the scribe's mistake (hence has no legal consequences). B. Mets. 14a, a. e. בא׳ . . . שמכר ראובן if R. sold to S. a field with surety (guaranteeing the title).
