איתן, אתן m. (b. h.; אית; cmp. אית, עות, אישון, אשן) 1) essence, permanent or normal condition. Nidd. 48b לאיתנו חזר obtained again its normal condition. Sot. 36b לא׳ קשתו שבה his membrum resumed its normal condi- tion. (Cmp.Ex. XIV, 27). -- 2) adj. essential, strong. R. Hash. 11a דתקיפי לישנא א׳ ethan means strong. -- Pl. איתנים. Ib. עולם איתני the mighty of the world (patriarchs). Gen. R. s. 98 (play on athono Gen. XLIX, 11) וכ׳ אתנים בנים mighty sons (heroes) are destined to descend from him. -- 3) pr. n. river Ethan. איתניס, אתניס, אתנס (=אתנסיס, אתנסס, v. נסס; or Ithpe. of נוס or ניס) to be taken sick. Sabb. 145b איתנסי (Ms. M. איתנייסי איתנייס tthpa.) אכורנקא, אכוורנקי, כוורנק m. (v. preced.; Pers. horengah, Arab. Khawarnak, Fl.) dining place, dining hall in the garden. Targ. Y. Deut. XXXII, 50, דמלכיא קי . . . . א׳ a royal banqueting hall (put up for the wedding). Taan. 14b; Meg. 5b (distinguishing between בנין, erection of a building, and נטיעה, putting up a temp- orary structure), what is meant by 'putting up a tent of joy'- מלכים של אכ׳ הנוטע זה Ms. M. (Ar. כ׳; ed. אב׳, corr. acc.) it means one putting up a regal banqueting tent (for his son's wedding). Erub. 25b וכ׳ אכ׳ (ed. אב׳) the Resh Gelutha was to have a banquet (on a Sabbath) in his garden.
