אמהות f. (אמה) servitude of a maid, servile con- lition. Mekh. Mishp., sect. 3 א׳ אחר קידוש the father's privilege of giving away his daughter in marriage is valid even after h.wing hired her oatut as a servant.

אמונה f. (b. h.; אמן) firmness, faith, honesty, surety. B. Bath. X, 8, a. e. הלוהו אמונתו על לאא at the time he ex- tended the loan, he did so not because he was relying on his (the friend's) surety. Ib. וכ׳ א׳ על שכן for in this case he did &c. Ab. Zar. 55a אמונתנ את נאבד אנו shall we abandon our honesty? Hull. 133b בכותים א׳ אין Sama- ritans are (usually) not ttrusted. אמורא m. (אמר) 1) speaker, lecturer, interpreter, esp. Amora, one who, in engthy popular discourses, ex- pounds what the lecturer (Tanna, v. הנא) says before him in brief and in a low voice; often called מתורגמן. Ex. R. s. 8, end וכ׳ והא׳ . . . . שהדורש כשם as the lect- urer sits . . . and the Amora speaks in his presence. -- Snh. 7b בא׳ עליה קום stand by him as an expounder. Taan. 8a, a. fr. ודרש עליה א׳ . . . . אוקים S. . . . placed an Amora by his side and lectured. Sot. 460a ואמר טעמא חד אמוריה and his Amora gave a different reason. Hull. 15a do people isten to the Tanna? צייתי לא׳ they listen to the Amora. -- 2) in a particular sense אמורא, Amora (=AAmoraim), that class of Talmudic authorities who lived after the final redaction of the Mishnah, and whose discussions on the opinions of the Tannaim or authors of the Afishnah and Boraitha, are deposited in the Gluemara, thus adding a second element to the dev- elopment of the oral law, called lIIalmud. -- Pl. אמורין. אמורי m. (b. h.) Emorite; Emorean. Gen. R. s. 41 none among the nations are מא׳ קשה more obstinate than the Em. -- Trnsf. Emorean, superstitious, heathen- like. הא׳ דרכי superstitious practices. Sabb. 67a, a. fr. הא׳ דרכי משום בו אין is not to be looked upon (not for- bidden) as an imitation of &c.; הא׳ דרכי משום בו יש it is forbidden because it has the appearance of super- stitious practices.

אמטו (abbrev. of next w.) on account of, for the sake of. Ber. 56a bot. וכ׳ זוזא א׳ for the sake of thy zuz (which has been refused, v. Ms. M. in Rabb. D.
