אמיינטון, אמינטון n. (~~~~~~, ~~~~~~) amiant, a variety of asbestos from which the reputed asbestos linen was spun, which was cleansed by being tthrown into the fire. Cant. R. to IV, 11; Pesik. אמיר, אמיר (part. pass. of אמר) told, proclaimed, commanded. Targ. Mic. V, 1. Targ. Mal. I, 6; a. fr.
אמירה I f. (אמר I) 1) speaking, speech. Gen. R. s. 5, beg. דיבור לא א׳ לא no (power of) speech or word; a. fr. --- א׳ הא this is speech, i. e. this is right. Y. Snh. IV, 22b top; VI, beg. 23b. Y. B. Kam. IX, beg. 6d (contracted) הא׳ same. -- 2) the word amar (אמד) in the Scripture texct. Y. Snh. VII, 25b bot. וכ׳ א׳ כאן נאמר here ammar is used &c.; as well as amar here indicates that the word is considered a deed &c.; a. e. -- 3) dedication (cmp. אימורים. Kidd. I, 6 וכ׳ לגבוה אמירתו dedication to the Lord (by word of mouth) is equal to what delivery is in private transactions. Pl. אמירות mostly in the sense of 2). Num. אמירה II f. (v. preced. 3); cmp. Ps. IV, 5; XCVI, 10; Is. III, 10) 1) proclamation, receiving homage. Ex. R. s. 29 when a human king וכ׳ לא׳ יוצא comes forth for a. reception of homage, he comes forth singly (not with his army). -- 2) distincttion, ornament. Yalk. Ex. 244, v. אימרה.

אמם, עמם (b. h. עמם; אם, עם to be pressed. dark; cmp. אם; חמם a. de iv.; v. אמיטתא) to grow dim, (in b. h. also to obscure, excel; v. infra). Sabb. 77b; Ber. 53b; Pes. 75b אוממות גחלים (or עוממות) dying coals (question as to spelling decided in favor of ע by uefer- ence to Ezek. XXXI, 8 the cedars did not obscure him, i. e. excel his beauty).

אמן I (אם, v. אם; cmp. preced.) to be strong, en- during; (act. v. אמן to support, v. II Kings XVII l, 16 אמנות). - Pi. אימן, אמן to support; trnsf. to confirm, vc ity, approve. Tosef. Ter. I, 4 it is not the minor thal 1Lade it T'rumah אחריו שאימן אביו אלא Var. (ed. Zuck. שאומן) but his father who confirmed his act (cib. יד על קיים) Y. ib. 40b ידו על א׳. Ib.' top מאמין. Nif. נאמן (b. h.) 1) part. נאמ m.. נאמנת f. approved, trust- worthy, reliable. Peah VIII, 2 וכ׳ על נאמנים (the poor) may be relied upon concerning garnered fruit &c., i. e. if they declare the fruits to be the poor man's share, they are exempt from tithes. Keth. I, 6 נאמנת her statement is acted upon as true. A b. Zar. 16b הדיין עלי ׳ my judge is a reliable witness concerning me, i. e. lI appeal to thy own judgment that I could not have engaged in such follies. -- Dem. אמן II m. (b. h.; v. preced.) firm, straight, whence 1) Amen, truel so may it be Shebu. 36a וכ׳ שבועה בו א׳ in Amen is implied an oath, a promise, and a prayer for fulfillment. Ab. Zar. 65a; a. fr. -- 2) fem., the response Amen. Ber. 47a חטופה א׳ an Amen hastily pronounced (men); קטופה א׳ an Amen cut short (ame-); יתומה א׳ an orphan Amen, the responder not having heard the bene- diction to which the Amen refers; Tosef. Meg. IV (III), 27.
אמנה f. (b. h.; v. preced.) 1) faith, trust. B Bath. 48b; Kem. Vb u wmmeeees swy רבייבי רתי ו׳a ox emskeuuוו.. (over our signatures as to having seen the loan handed over) was a matter of trust (that the negotiatiomm would be consummated afterwards). Ib. א׳ שטר a bill of
