*אסכלא, איס׳ m. pl. (ξυλα,=σκευη ξυλινα, v. Sm. Ant. s. v. Ships, a var. lect. quoted below) the wooden implements of a ship, oars, ladders, poles &c. Tosef. B. Bath. IV, 1 he who sells a ship האיסכ׳ את מכר (some ed. איסק׳) sells implicitly the oars &c., (Mish. B. Bath. V, 1מנהיגין); B. אסל, אסיל m. (סלל; cmp. Gr. ασιλλα) a pole or yoke carried on two or, more commonly, on one shoulder. Par. VII, 5 בא׳ וקושרו and fastens the bucket to the pole. Kel. XVII, 16 וכ׳ בו שיש הא׳ a carrying yoke in which there is a (hidden) receptacle for money; Koh. R. to IX, 13 אסיל.

אסלא II, אסלה, עסלא f. (אסל, עסל, dial. or אצל, עצל, cmp. ניסל) 1) foot-sttool, folding sttool. Sabb. 138a וא׳ טרסקל וכסא מטה (Ms. M. וערסלא, Alf. איסקלא, v. Rabb. D. אסמכתא f. (סמך) 1) support, reliance. Keth. 67a הוא אארעא אסמכתייהו their reliance rests on the landed property. -- 2) &criptural tegxt used as a support for a rabbinical enactment, intimation (אקרא אסמכוה 'they leaned their enactment against a Bible text'). Hull. 64b בעלמא א׳ וקרא מדרבנן it is actually a rabbinical law, and the Bible text (quoted) is a mere support or mnemotech- nical aid. Ib. 77a; a. fr. ---3) (law) Asmakhta (suretty), a promise to submit to a forfeiture of pledged property (or eguivalent) without having received a sufffcient con- sideration; collateral security with the condition of for. feiture beyond the amount to be secured; e. g. A pays a portion of his indebtedness to B, leaving the bill of debt as a security in the hands of a third party, and agreeing to pay the full amount on the bill, if, at a stipulated time, he should fail to pay the due balance. Bath. 168a קניא לא א׳ asmakhta does not purchase, gives no ttitle, i. e. gives the claimant no rights (because the law presumes that he who made such a promise, could not have meant it seriously but had in view only to give his transaction the character of good faith and solemnity); ibid. קניא א׳ asm. is a valid legal transfer of property. B. Mets. 66a; 73b. Ned. 27b; a. e. - Snh. 24b applied to forfeiture of stake in gambling (inasmuch as it makes the gambler an immoral person disqualified for witness or judge in court).
