אשפר m. (b. h.; שפר, cmp. שופרא) a goodly piece (cmp. דשנא), a certain quantity of meat, eshpar. Pes. 36b וכ׳ אחד א׳ an eshpar is one sixth of a bullock (as if com- posed of שש and פר; cmp. אספר).
אשפרא m. (שפר) the scourer of dresses. Pl. אשפרי. Ab. Zar. 20b (Ms. M. אשפירי, ed. אשפורי).
אשפת, אישפת f. (b. h. אש׳, v. אשפה) heap. pile. dunghill. Pl. אשפתות, איש׳. Shebi. III, 2. - Sot. 42b אי׳ וכ׳ של אי׳ piles of slain.
אשקוקה (אשקיקה) ashkukah, a fictitious word as a disguise ofשבועה, oath, wear(cmp. אליקי, איפופי). Ned. 10b כלום אמר לא א׳ if one says ashkukah, he has said nothing (his vow is not binding); v. שקוקה.

אשר (b. h., אש, v. אשש) to exist, be strong, happy; v. ישר. Pi. אישר, אשר (b. h.) 1) to exalt, praise, declare happy. Pesik. R. s. 45 מאשרם התחיל he commenced by declaring them happy; v. אשרי. -- 2) to substanfiate; to verify, attest to. Num. R. s. 14 הדין את לאשר to give strength to the legal decision Y. Gitt. IX, 50c bot. אישרנוהו (אישרנוהי) we have verified it in the presence of &c. -- Part. pass. מאושר 1) firm, strong. Gen. R. s. 5, beg. the bux-tree is called תאשור because it is וכ׳ מא׳ the strongest of all (cmp. אשל). Y. Succ. III, 54a top; Y. Meg. I, 72a top וכ׳ שבכלן המא׳ the strongest (expression) of all, is Halle- lujah. -- 2) substantial, good, rich. Gen. R. s. 90, end (ref. to אשר כל את Gen. XLI, 56) שבהם המאושרין the best stores ofall. b. s. 28. -- Snh. 22a is called Ashurith שמאושרת בכתב because iits charactergdhre substantial (Ar. שמאושר); Y. Meg. I, 71b bot.; Y. Sot. VII, 21c top. Hithpa. התאשר to be set up, be erected. Sifra K'dosh. beg. (play on אשדים) מאחרים מתאשרים שהם שם על because they are put up by others.
אשר ch. same. [Ithpe. איתשר to be strengthened. Targ. Y. Deut. X, 2 ייתשר, prob. to be read יתישר, v. ישר] Pa. אשר 1) to make strong. Keth. 10b; Gitt. 70a (dates) מאשרן give strength. -- 2) to confirm, verify; also to credit, (consider true). Keth. 21a וכ׳ אשרנוהי we verified it &c., v. preced. -- Gitt. 30b (prov.) וכ׳ א׳ מית חברך if you are told, 'your friend is dead', believe it; 'your friend has grown rich' תאשר לא don't trust.
אשר m. (b. h.), only in plur. constr. אשרי the hap- piness of, happy is he, are they &c. Pes. 117a; a. fr. -- Midr. Till. to Ps. LXXXIV אשראי happy am I. -- Yoma VIII, 9 אשריסש happy are ye. Ib. 87a לצדיקים אשריהם happy are the righteous; a. fr.

אשראי m. pl. (v. אשר Pa.) sale on trust, debts for goods sold. Pes. 113a וכ׳ א׳ כל in all sales on trust it is doubtful, whether it (the money) will be forthcoming or not, and if it is, it is bad money, (partial payment, bad coins&c). - B. Mets. 63b ליהא׳וכ׳ איתhe has debts to collect. B. Bath. 22a וכ׳ א׳ לן אית we have outstanding debts to collect (and we must stay until we have collected them).
