בהותא f. (בהי) confusion. Targ. Prov. XXVI, 21 ed. Wil. (Ms. בחותא; oth. ed. כהותא).
בהי, בהא, בהה (b. h.; בה, cmp. בוא, to be broken into; to gasp; to burst forth, v. בהק, בהר; v. Ges. Hebr. Dict. s. v.) to be stirred up, confounded, in disorder. - Gen. R. s. 2, beg. ובוהא תוהא; ib. fem. ובוהא תוהא bewildered and confounded. *if. הבהה to clear (the field), cmp. בעה. Y. Sabb. VII, 10a top בחרשים המברה (read המבהה). Y. Shebi. בהיר, בהור m. (בהר; b. h. בהיר) white, white spot (cloud). -- Pl. בהירין, בהו׳. Taan. 7b (ref. to Job XXXVII, 21) וכ׳ ׳wבח בהי׳ עומדין שהעננים בשעה אפי׳ Ms. M., even when the clouds stand in white spots, there comes a wind &c.; edit. בהו׳ בהו׳ נעשה שרקיע the sky is made (to appear) full of white clouds.
בהירא, m. בהירי same. Targ. Job XXXVII, 21 וכ׳ מן ב׳ white clouds without giving rain &c.
בהית, v. בהת.
בהל (b. h.; בה, v. בהי) to hurry, be excited, anx- ious. Part. pass. בהול ercited, pressed. Pes. 11a sq. אדם וכ׳ הוא ב׳ man is excited when his property is at stake. Ib. 72b ב׳ זמנו his time (for doing the thing) is pressed (it cannot be postponed). Yoma 85a, a. e. מתו על ב׳ anx- ious to save his dead relative from the fire. Pi. ביהל to agitate, frighten. Y. Yoma VI, 43c bot. מבהלינו אתה למה why dost thou agitate us. Hithpa. a. Nithpa. התבהל, נתבהל to be excited, con- founded. Num. R. s. 14 (ref. to tibbahel, Koh. VII1, 3) וכ׳ תתבהל אל be nof intimidated by his wrath, Ib. מעשיה מן ׳ לא he was not carried away by her (tempt- ing) actions. Ib. וכ׳ מפנאי נ׳ לא he was not confounded on account of his being alone in the house. Pesik. R. s. 36 ומתבהלים מתרעשים were in commotion and alarm. -- Part. Hof. מובהל, or Pual מבוהל confounded, hard to pronounce or remember. Gitt. 14b וכ׳ מוב׳ שמותיהן Ar. (ed. מבו׳) their names are bewildering, beginning with Arda, Arta, Phile. -- [Deut. R. s. 9 מובלגת דעתו, read מובהלת his mind is confused, he cannot collect himself for prayer.]
בהל, בהיל ch. same. - Pa. בהיל 1) to be precocious, inconsiderate, hasty. Targ. Koh. V, 1; a. e. -- 2) as h. Piel. Targ. Job XXIII, 16; a. fr. thpa. אתבהל, tthpe. אתבהיל, איתבהל 1) to be hurried,. to hurry. Targ. Esth. II, 9. -- 2) to be agitated. Targ. I Sam. XXVIII, 21; a. fr. - Y. Keth. I, 25a is it possible that the whole town וכ׳ מתבהלה was excited on account of Naomi?
בהלה f. (b. h.; בהל) suddenness, sudden calamity, shock. Y. Bicc. II, 64d top; S'mah. III, 9 מיתה לשנים ב׳ של death after two days sickness is a shocking death. - Y. B. Mets. II, end, 8d a rending of garments שאינו וכ׳ ב׳ של which is not done under the influence of the first shock (after the sad news) is considered as if not perttormed at all. -- Pl. בהלות. Num. בהם (בהמי?) m. (denom. of next w.) cattle-driver, cattle-raiser, driver. Deut. R. s. 3 עמו והבהם and the driver (leader of the ass) was with him. *[Y. Ned. XI, end, 42d פיתני שלי הביאם (בהסכ)my stable-man (a gentile) has seduced me. Ib. אוסר הביאם אין (not אסור) (do you believe) the stable-man's connection with thee has no restrictive consequences? [V. בהמה f. (b. h.; בהם, Ethiop. to be dumb; בה, v. בהי) cattle, guadruped domestic animal (mostly of the horned race); in gen. dumb beast, opp. to man. Gen. R. s. 20 ועופות חיה ב׳ domestic animals, wild beasts, and birds; a. fr. -- גסה ב׳ large cattle (of the bovine race); דקה ב׳ small cattle (sheep, goats &c.).
