בימה f. (cmp. במה) elevated stand for public meet- ings (for speakers, readers, holding court &c.). Sot. VII, 8. Succ. 51b. Ab. Zar. I, 7 (ib. 16b בימא). Gen. R. s. 76 as if seated ודן ב׳ על upon the platform and holding court. Lev. R. s. 13 ב׳ מצעת כאילו ונראית and gives itself the appearance as ifholding court (giving the form of legality to robberies). בימוס, בימס m. (an adaptation of βωμος, treated in infdection as a cacophemismm=מיאוס בי, v. Tosef. Ab. Zar. V, 6, quot. bel., cmp. איצטריא; Syr. בומסא, Ch. במסא, בימסא, במוסא) pedestal of idolatrous statuary. Ab. Zar. III, 7 a stone originally hewn לב׳ for an idol's pedestal. Tosef. ib. V (VI), 8 שנפגם ב׳ a broken bomos, (contrad. to מזבח); Bab. ib. 53b bot. וכ׳ אבן ב׳ a bomos is made of one stone, an altar of several. Tosef. ib. VI, 10; a. fr. -- [Y. B. Mets. X, end, 12c ב׳ גבי על העלה, read דימוס.]--- Pl. בימוסאות, בימוסיאות, בימוסיות, בימס׳. Ab. Zar. IV, 6 (53b) מלכים של ב׳ (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l., Mish. N. בומסיות) pedestals temporarily put up for the reception of princes (governors). Ib. 54a השמד בשעת בימסיאות Ms. M. (v. Rabb. D. בין, בון (b. h.; בה, v. בוא) to pierce, split, pen- etrate; whence, to discern, understand; v. Hif. a Pole(בונן (cmp. בין) to cause to penetrate, to saturate. SifraVayikra,N'dab., Par. 12, ch. XIVtref. to Lev. II, 13) יכול תבונהו from bammelah I might judge, 'thou must thor- oughly saturate it, תמלח ת״ל therefore it says, 'timlah' (thou shalt strew). Men. 21a (quoting Sifra l. c.] מאי תבונהו what does the word tbonnehu mean? Said R. b. C. כתבן יתבוננו יכול הק (taking ת as radical, as iff im- perat. of a verb תבן, denom. of חבן) it means, I might. suppose, he must mix it up like straw in clay (v. infra). Said A. to him ליה מיבעי יתבוננו א״ה if so, then it ought to read (in the Sifra) yithbonennu (third person). But saidA. (taking it fr. בנה) כבניין יעשנ יכול Imight supposc,. he shall heap the salt upon it like a building (a pile). Said R. to him, ליה מיבעי יבננו א״ה then it ought to read yibnemnnu. But said R. (you must correct the Sifra so as to read) תבוניהו יכול (corr. תביניהו) thou shalt make it savory . . . . . כבינה טעם בו יתן he shall put a taste into it as does understanding into a man, v. טעם. Ab. Zar. III, 5 (45a) אאני לפניך אובין (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 8) let me be thy interpreter (let me explain what you mean) וכ׳ מקום כל (the words וכ׳ ההרים על, Deut. XII, 2, are explanatory) wherever thou findest a high mountain &c., know there must be an idol. [In the version וכ׳ אובין אהיה אני, אובין is used as a part. of a verb אבין, denomin. of בין, to act as a mediator or interpreter.] 2) הבין (b. h.) to perceive, make intelligible, esp. to find analogies (between two cases). דבר מתוך דבר ה׳ prop. to bring out one thing from between another, i e. to form a conlusion by analgy. Sabb. 31a וכ׳ הבנתה hast thou cultivated thy mind to conclude &c. (ref. to דעת Is. XXXIII, 6). Snh. 93b; a. fr. Hag. II, 1 (11b) מדעתו מבין חכם (not ומבין, v. Rabb. D. VIII, 20) may be read vayaben, i. e. he refected, argued.
