R. l. c. some ed. בלריות) thick gold chains (as translation of יתר, Job XXII, 20). -- 2) plait or locks, esp. the long hair worn by the Roman and Greek youths of the upper classes and offered to the gods on arriving at puberty (v. Sm. Ant. s. v. א~fx). Ab. Zar. I, 3 ובלוריתו זקנו תגלחת יום the day of shaving his (the gentile's) beard and cutting his locks (v. Maim. a. l.). Ib. 29a. Tosef. Sabb. VI (VII), 1. Deut. R. s. 2 וכ׳ ב׳ העושה he who grows a wig does so for none but an idolatrous purpose. Lev. R. s. 23; a. fr. - Snh. 82a תפשה בבלוריתה he seized her by her plait.

בלט (בל, v. בלל; cmp. פלט, מלט, ולד; cmp. Assyr. בלט to live, Schr. K gloss. I II) 1) (neut. v.) to stand forth, prqject; to be cut in relief, opp. שקע to sink, be engraven. R. Hash. 24b בולט שחותמה טבעת Ms. M. (ed. incorr.) a ring whose seal is cut in relief; Y. Ab. Zar. III, 42c bot. Gitt. 20aq. Sot. III, 4 בולטות עיניה her eyes protruded; Num. בלטוורא, read בבושרות. Cant. R. to II, 15 קיניגין שטיחם זה וייטורד דיחתו דא ב׳ מן עתידים ודיארמיה מכללה אחריהם, read, acc. to intimation in comment. Mat. K., as follows; בכשרות אסירים מוציא ההד ותייטרן קיניגין בים אחריהם הבאים שכ׳ זה התייטרון ואח״כ (the passage through the RedSea andthe comingofthe noble Egyptians afterwards was) like the order of the kynegion (the actors in the fights of the arena) and the theatron (the spectators), as it says (Ps. LXVIII, 7), 'He leadeth forth the captives with their outfits', and then come the spec- tators, as we read (Ex. XIV, 28), 'who came after them into the Sea.'

בלי, בלה (b. h.; בל, v. בלל; cmp. נבל) to be crumbled; to be worn out, to fail, decay, perish. Koh. R. to I, 4 בולה הוא it (the generation of man) decays (dies out), בולה אינה it (the earth) does not grow old. Taan. 9a (play on די בלי עדMal.III, 10) שפתותיכם שיבלו עד די מלומר until your lips grow ired from saying, It is enough; (Y. ib. III, 66d bo. שיבללו, v. בלל); a. fr. -- Part. pass. בלוי outworn. Pl. בלויים. Midr. Till. to Ps. XXV, 1. Pi. בלה to wear out, outlive, survive. Lev. R. s. 4 וכ׳ מבלה הנפש the soul survives the body. Ib. s. 19 (play on בלתך אין, I Sam. II, 2) לבלותך אין there is none to outlive thee. Koh. R. l. c.; Cant. R. to V, 15 one erects a building אותו מבלה ואחר (not מכלה) and another man ruins it. Snh. 105a, v. בלעם. Nif. נבלה, Nithpa. נתבלה to become outworn, fade away. Esth. R. introd. להבלות עתידין (Gen. R. s. 42 לבלות) are destined to decay. Deut. R. s. 7, end נתבלו (the garments) were worn out. B. Mets. 87a הבשר ׳ her body was with- ered. B. Bath. 146a ליבלות עשויין made to be used up.
בלי I, בלא, בלה ch. same. Targ. Deut. VIII, 4; b. Y. XXIX, 4 בלמו, Var. כלמו, read בלת; a. fr. -- Lev. R. s. 19 בלה כולו all goes to ruin. Ber. 5b, v. בכא. Ib. 6a. Bekh. 9a ואזול להו ובלו they failed and went to destruction. Ab. V, 22 בה ובלה סיב grow old and frail in it (the study of the Iaw). - l[Targ. Ps. LXII, 11; XCI, 2 Ms., v. כלי I] Pa. בלי as preced. Pl. --Targ. Is. III, 15; a. e. -Ab. Zar. 20a that this beauty עפרא ב׳ dust will destroy. -- Part. pass. f. מבליא. Lev. R. s. 33 (interpret. נאפים בלה Ezek. XXIII, 43) Aquila translates tum ~~vx (old harlot), גייארא מבליא דהוא ed. (Ar. גיירייא מב׳ דהיא, Yalk. Dan. 1061 only מבליא דהיא) which means, a wasted harlot (wasted through fornication).
*בלי II m. pl. constr. (preced., cmp. בלאות, בלויים) rotten pieces of (wood). Targ. Is. XLIV, 19 (h. text בול, v. Rashi a. l.; Var. יבלי).
בלי (b. h., v. preced. ws.) prop. destruction, naught; not; v. בלימה. Ber. 44b בשר מב׳ if without meat.

*בליונא, ביליונא m. (בלי, formed like בזיונא) [de- struction,] a cacophem. for idolatrous phylactery, amulet (v. Sm. Ant. s. v. Amuletum). דגושפנקא ב׳ (Ar. בילוניא) an amulet (stone) set in a ring. Gitt. 57a ב׳ דמתחזי עד וכ׳ so that the stone of a ring could be distinguished (as to shape, legend &c.) at a distance of a mile (fromm the illuminated town). Ib. 58a וכ׳ ב׳ נקטי(Yalk. Lam. 1242 כיליינא, כול׳) they took an amulet (believed to efect the begetting of healthy and handsome children).

בלילה f. (בלל, v. בילה) mixing, mixture. Y. Maas. S. I, b3a; Y. Dem. V, 24d top וכ׳ אלא ב׳ אין b'lilah (an even distribution) applies only to wine or oil. Men. III, 2 וכ׳ עבה בלילתה זו the one forms a thick mixture (one Log of oil to one ssaron of flour), the other forms a loose mixture (three Log to one Issaron). -- Pl. בלילות. Tosef.
