גאי, גאה (b. h.; גא, גו, גה to rise; to be arched, caved) to rise, swell; trnsf. to be elated, proud; to be e- alted, majestic. Mekh. B'shall., Shirah 2, v. infra. [Tosef. M. Kat. I, 7 גואה, v. גהה.] Pi. גאה, גיאה to exalt. Mekh. l. c. וגאתיו גאני He (the Lord) exalted me, and I exalt him; Tanh. ib. 12 גאוני וגאיתיו; Yalk. Ex. 242 וגואותיו (corr. acc.). Y. Taan. III, 67a top (ref. to Job XXIII, 29) . . . . להשפילן אמרתי אני לגאותן I (the Lord) decreed to humble them (by dearth), and thou -- to raise them (Bab. ib. 23a הגבהתו). Hithpa. התגאה, Nithpa. נתגאה to show one's self glorious, exalt one's self, be exalted; (in an evil sense) to be proud, boast, to lord it. Mekh. l. c. (ref. to Ex. XV. 1) להתגאות ועתיד גאה He was glorious and will be &c. Ib. המתגאים כל על הוא מתגאה He exalts himself above all those who are boastful, וכ׳ לפניו מתג׳ שאו״ה שבמה for that with which the nations boast themselves, becomes the means of their punishment; Tanh. l. c. -- Hag. 13b, v. גאה. Ib. 5b וכ׳ המתג׳ פרנס an officer who lords it over the com- munity. B. Bath. 98a וכ׳ בטלית המתג׳ who parades the scholar's cloak. Tosef. Sot. III, 10 sq. וכ׳ אלא נתגאו לא became haughty only in consequence of the bounties &c.; Snh. 109a. Ber. 10b זה ונתג׳ ושתה שאכל לאחר Ms. M. (ed. שנתג׳ לאחר; Yalk. Kings ונתג׳ זה . . . . .; Lev. 616 שגאה לאחר) after this man has eaten and drunk and become haughty, v. גאים. Lev. R. s. 10 עליו לבו נתג׳ (Ex. R. s. 37 דעתו זחה) became overbearing.

גאים m. pl. (abstract noun, v. גאה; cmp. חיים) loft- iness, excellence; (in a bad sense) haughtiness. Hull. 92a (play on שריגים, Gen. XL, 10) וכ׳ בכל ג׳ שרי שלשה the three princes of excellence (influential patrons of Israel) in every generation (in Palestine under the Roman, in Babylon under the Parthian government). -- Ber. 10b; Yalk. Lev. 616 (ref. to I Kings XIV, 9) גאיך אלא גוך א״ת read not gavvekha (thy body), but geekha, thy swelling or pride (applied to taking a meal before prayer), v. גאה.
גאל (b. h.) [to cover, cmp. Job III. 4;] to ransom, redeem, protect. Pes. X, 6 וכ׳ וג׳ גאלנו has protected us and redeemed our ancestors. Gen. R. s. 78, beg.; Midr. Till. to Ps. XXV, beg.; Lam. R. to III, 23 אמונתד לגאלנו רבה thy faith is great enough to redeem us. Gen. R. s. 44. -- Kidd. 20b לחצאין וגואל וגואל לוה he may borrow money and redeem his property (from the sanctuary), and may redeem in instalments. Midr. Till. to Ps. XXXI, beg. אותנו גאל redeem us; a. fr. -- V. גואל. Nif. נגאל to be redeemed. Ber. 9a וכ׳ ישראל כשנגאלו when the Israelites were redeemed from Egypt. Kidd. 15b (ref. to Lev. XXV, 54) וכ׳ נ׳ הוא באלה through those (his relations) he may be redeemed, but he is not freed after six years of service (Ex. XXI. 2). Ib. 20b when the jubilee year arrives נגאלה ולא and it (the field) has not been redeemed. Ib. מיד ליגאל כחו יפה it has the privilege of immediate redemption. *גאם = גמא to swallow. Pa. גאם to make swallow. Hull. 111a לשבא גאמו make (the son of) Sh'ba swallow it (Rashi). [Ar. reads גמו (contr. Pa. of געם or גאם, cmp. Syriac געם P. Sm. 761 sq.) it made (the son of) Sh. feel nauseous (which was his reason for not eating it.]
