גבה (b. h.; v. גבב; cmp. גאה) to be high; to be elated. Meg. 15a וכ׳ המן ׳ (Var. המן של לבו ׳) Haman is haughtier than Ahasver (he dared what Ah. did not venture); Yalk. Esth. 1056. -- Sot. 5a למעלה סיני הר ג׳ ולא and Mount Sinai did not rise higher (grow proud). Hif. הגביה 1) to raise, elevate; to make elated. Taan. 23a a generation which was to be humbled בתפלתן הגבהתו hast thou lifted up through thy prayer, v. גאה. --Erub. 55a כשמים עליו דעתו שמגביה מי Ms. M. (ed. עליה, ed. Sonc. כשמ׳ עצמו מגב׳; v. Rabb. D. S. a. l.; Yalk. Deut. 940 דעתו שמגיס) who exalts his mind in himself as high as the heavens (who considers himself very wise, ed. who considers himself on account of his knowledge of it as high &c.). גבה, גביה ch. same, to be high, elated. Targ. Ps. CXXXI, 1. - Sabb. 67a וכ׳ מכל גביהת thou art bigher than all other trees. Meg. 15a וכ׳ מלכא ג׳ Ms. M. (ed. גבר) the King on high is higher than the king below. Hull. 7b וכ׳ טורא כ׳ a mountain rose between them (separating them). [Y. Ter. X, 47b bot. דאבהתיה מן גביה, Tosaf. to Hull. 64b גמיר.] Af. אגבה 1) to raise. Targ. II Chr. XXXIII. 14.-- 2) to take up. Succ. 44b וכ׳ אגבהיה he took it (the festive wreath) up once as such and a second time for the willow branches thereon. B. Mets. 2b אגבהוה הדדי בהדי they took the lost object up at the same time. גנהות f. (b. h.; preced.) height, excellence; pride, haughtiness. Ber. 10b (ref. to Ps. CXXX, 1) לפני ג׳ אין וכ׳ there must be no hight (elevated stand during prayer) before the Lord. Esth. R. to IV, 15 לב מג׳ from haughti- ness. - Tanh. Ki Thissa 27 עולם של גבהותו the hight of the world, i. e. the Most High.

גבוה m. (b. h.; preced. ws.), constr. גבה 1) high, exalted, elevated &c. Sot. 5a among men וכ׳ ׳pה את רואה ג׳ a high persou looks up to a higher one, but ignores the lower one. Gen. R. s. 22 (ref. to Ps. XXXII, 1) happy is he וכ׳ מפשעו ג׳ שהוא who is higher than (who controls) his sin, and whose sin is not higher than himself; a. fr. -- Snh. 5b (in Chald. diction) הוה עינים גבה . . . אבוה this man's(my) father was ambitious. - Fem. גבוהה. Ab. V, 19 ׳ רוח haughliness, opp. נמוכה. - Pl. גבוהים, f. גבוהות. Esth. R. to IV, 7 הושפלו הג׳ the high were lowered. -- Y. Shebi. VI, 36c top ג׳ היו . . . עיניו my father was am- bitious, v. supra. - Esp. הגבוה the Mtostt High. Y. Snh. VII, 25b top; ib.c top בעבודת(הג׳ בעבודתה with a service peculiar to it (that idol), or with a service prescribed for the worship of the Lord; Y. Naz. VI, beg. 54c למלאכת הג׳ referring to a service prescribed for the worship of the Lord (but applied to an idol). -- Y. Ned. I, 37a topp; Y. Naz. גבול I (b. h.; גבל) [heap, mound,] 1) landmark, bound- ary;. limit; qualification. B. Bath. 69b (ref. to Gen. XXIII, 17) סביב לג׳ שצריך מי such trees as require boundaries (small trees, are included in the sale). Ab. Zar. 24b לה יש ג׳ this assertion (לקרבן בהמה מהן לוקחין, ib. 23b) must be qualified. Y. HHall. I, 57b top (ref. to Is. XXVIII, 25) לחם של גבולו ע״כ so far goes the definition of bread, i. e. only these species can be called lehem. -
