גדל II (v. preced.; cmp. גדש) [to heap up, round;] to plait, dress the hair. Kel. XVI, 7 מצנפות גודלי cap- weavers (on a model head, v. אמום). Ib. XV, 3 וגודלות and dress their hair. Sabb. X, 6 הגודלת she who plaits her hair (on the Sabbath). Ib. 94bbot. אורגת משום גודלת, plaiting the hair (is forbidden on the Sabbath) as an act of weaving; ib. 95a (another opin.) בונה משום . . . ג׳ as an act of building. Y. ib. VII, 10 צורה כלי הגודל he who forms raised figures on a vessel. M. Kat. 11a תנור ג׳, to build a stove.

גדלת, גודלת f. (נדל II) hair-dresser. Kel. XV, 3 the sieve-like receptacle גד׳ של (Mish. ed. גודלות pl.) of the hair-dresser. Kidd. II, 3 וכ׳ גד׳ שפחה או בת לי שיש ע״מ (Y. a. Talm. ed. 49b מגודלת, Ar. מגדלת) under the condition that I shall have a (free) girl or a hand-maid as a hair- dresser, and she has none, or 'that I shall have none', and she has. Ib. 49a מאי ממש גדולה מגודלת מאי סברת מי וכ׳ גדלת מגודלת do you think m'guddeleth of the Mishnah means really a well-trained (girl or hand-maid)? It means a hair-tresser, when she may see, I want none to take up my words and carry them to my neighbors. Y. ib. II, 62c bot. לשמשותיך ושפחה לגודלתיך בת מתניתן כיני the Mishnah means this; a girl for thy hair-dresser (or thy governess), and a hand-maid for thy attendant. Laev. R. s. 19 וכ׳ והג׳ לג׳ נפיים let us win the favor of the (queen's) hair- dresser (or governess), and the hair-dresser will win the queen and the queen the king; Gen. R. s. 100.
גדם (v. גדד I) to lop off, stump. Part. pass. גדום, f. גדומה. Zeb. 62b ג׳ אמה (Y. Yoma IV, 41c bot. גמודה) a. reduced cubit, v. אמה. [Gen. R. s. 12 ג׳ אמה, read גרומה, v. גרם.] Tosef. Bekh. V, 4 גדומות אצבעותיו ed. Zuck. (Var. גרומות) with stump-like fingers. Hithpa. התגדם to be cut off, lopped. Taan. 21a . . . ידי יתגדמו may my hands . . . . be stumped (through sickness).

גדנפא (גדפנא) m. (גדף, with inserted נ) rim, en- closure. Targ. O. Ex. XXV, 25, a. e. (ed. Berl. גד׳, Y. גפוף, h. textמסגרת). Targ. Ezek. XLIII, 13; 17 (h. text גבול). -- Succ. 20b ג׳ ליה דאית (Ms. M. גדפנא, Ar. גדפא) when the matting has a rim (so as to be used as a receptacle for fruits). Ab. גדע (b. h.; v. גדד I) to cut, chop, lop off. -Y. Sabb. IV, end, 7a וכ׳ שגדען חריות twigs which one cut off (trimming the date tree) with the intention of using them for &c. (Bab. ib. 50a גדר). -- Part. pass. גדוע, f. גדועה; pl. גדועים, גדועות. Midr. Till. to Ps. LXXV, end ג׳ ישראל קרני the horns (power) of Israel are lopped off (checked). Pi. גירע, גידע. Ib.; Midr.
