גרגרנית, גרגרניתא, v. גרגרן b. a. ch.
גרגרת (b. h. pl. גרגרות neck; גרגר; v. גרר, a. גרה) throat, gullet; (in ritual law) wind-pipe, trachea. Koh. R. to XII, 6; Lev. R. s. 18, v. גלה Hif. -- Ex. R. s. 24 the Lord created for man גרגרתו בתוך מעין a well (mucous membranes) in the trachea. Hull. II, 4 הג את פסק he tore open (instead of cutting) the trachea. Ib. III, 3 הג׳ פסוקת an animal with a split between tthe rings of the wind -pipe.
גרגשתא, גרגוש׳, גרגיש׳ f. (=גשגש׳; גשש)=h. גוש, 1) clod, lump of earth. Targ. Ps. XVIII, 43. Targ. Job VII, 5 (h. text גוש). Targ. Y. Gen. I, 24; a. fr. -- Pl. גרגשתא, גרניש׳. Targ. Job XXI, 33; XXX VIII, 38 (h. text רגבים). -- 2) a certain reddish clay, used also as medicine. B. Mets. 40a ג׳ משום the difference of opinion as regards leakage (v. בלע) arises from the different qual- ities of the clay used for the vessels. Nidd. 20a bot. broke apart דג׳ קורטא a piece of potter's clay. Keth. 60b גרגוש׳ דאכלה a woman who eats gargushta (as an astrin- gent or in place of a cosmetic; v. Sm. Ant. s. v. Creta). Ab. Zar. 38b.

גרד (b. h.; v. גרר) 1) to scratch, scrape, comb. Sabb. VIII, 6 (81a) לגרוד Ar. a. ed. Y.; a. fr. [Editions a. Mss. mostly גגרר q. v.)-- Part. pass. גרור stripped, v. גרייום. -- 2) (denom. of גרד 2) to cut the web with its fringes off the loom. Yoma 72b (expl. השרד בגדי Ex. XXXV, 19) וכ׳ מכליהן כברייתן אותן שגורדין בגדים webs which they cut off the looms in their needed shape (so as to require no tailoring), leaving a small portion of the unwoven threads.
גרד ch. same; 1) to scrape, comb, strip; trnsf. to chastise. Targ. Jud. VIII, 16 וגרד Regia (ed. Lag. גרר, oth. ed. תבר; h. text וודע). -- Naz. 4b, v. גרי. -- Part. pass. גריד. גרד m. (גרד) 1) erasure. Men. 30b Ar. (ed. גרר). -- 2) that which is combed, fringe. -- Pl. נרדין. Ib. 42b; Succ. 9a.
גרדא ch. same, 1) combing; דסרבלא ג׳ the removal of the woolly surface of a thick cloth. B. Kam. 99a; B. Mets. 112a. -- M. Kat. 23a went out דס׳ בג׳ (Ms. M. 2 בגררא) in a fresh scraped and smoothed cloak. -- 2) fringe, thread. Sabb. 134a מיניה ג׳ מידביק דילמא (Var. גרדתא מדביקא, v. גרדום m. (גרדם) a stump. Ruth R. s. 1 end איש וילך כ׳ 'and a man went' (Ruth I 1)-a stump, i. e. without any description as to what he took with him (opp. to the description of the return to Palestine, Ezra II, 66); . [Yalk. Ezra 1067 גדוד, v. גדד; ib. Ruth 598 גרוד stripped, alone, cmp. גרייא.]-- Pl. גרדומין, constr. גרדומי. Tosef. Par, XII(XI), 2 אזוב ג׳ stumped stalks of hyssop; ציצית ג׳ (not ניצית); Men. 38b תכלת ג׳ remnant of the tsitsith. גרדום, גרדון m. (גרד, cmp. Targ. Jud. VIII, 6 s. v. גרד; cmp. ססדק) place of torture and execution, (Roman) executioner's scafold, gallows. Sabb. 32a לידון לג׳ העולה he who ascends the scaffold to be punished. Ab. Zar. I, 7 וכ׳ ג׳ בסילקי a basilica, a scaffold &c., interpreted ib. 16b ג׳ של בס׳ a basilica for ttortures, executions &c., l. e. a. basilica for holding court. Pesik. Shimu, p. 118b תלאו בגרדון ordered him to be suspended on the gallows (for torture); Y. Taan. IV, 69b top בג׳ תליין (cmp. Gitt. 57b, a. e. וכ׳ מסריקנא). Tosef. Kel. B. Mets. X, end והגרדין טהור ed. Zuck. (ed. ברדין; corr. acc.) the torturer's block is not affected by levitical impurity.
