הגה m. (b. h.; preced.) thought, study. Gen. R. s. 49 (ref. to Job XXXVII, 2) תורה אלא ה׳ אין hegeh (thought, speculation) means study of the Law.

הגזין, v. חגזין.
הגזר m. (גזר) (restriction,] hegzer, a word made up as a substitute for הקדש. Y. Ned. I, beg. 36c, v. הגדר.
הגי, הגה (b. h.; v. אגא) [to point, pierce.] 1) to reason, argue, deduct. Koh. R. to I, 16 הוגה הלב the heart reasons (ref. to Ps. XLIX, 4 הגות). Deut. R. s. 11 הוגיה those who study the Law, contrad. to עושיה. -- Y. Meg. I, 72b וכ׳ תורה נח ה׳ Noah deducted a new law from a given law. Gen. R. s. 49 וכ׳ בתורה הוגה שהוא who shall discuss the Law in seventy languages; a. fr. -- 2) to pronounce, recite, spell. Midr. Till. to Ps. XC, 9 (ref. to הגה, ib.) הוגה שהוא נער זה like a boy that spells (with difficulty). Snh. X (IX), I ההוגה וכ׳ he who pronounces the Divine Name as it is written, v. אגא. Koh. R. to XII, 12 (ref. to להג ib.) וכ׳ ניתנו להגות they are good for reading exercises but not for painful study; v. הגיון. Y. Meg. IV, 74d bot. מפיו הוגה יהא לא וקורא he must not spell (the letters of a Biblical book) from memory and dictate for writing a scroll. -- 3) to mur׳mur a charm, v. Hif. Nif. נהגה to be spelled, read. Sabb. XII, 4; 5, זה נהגין זה עם letters which can be read together (give sense). Pi. הגה (also from יגה) to pierce, sting; מכה ה׳ to prickle, open a wound; trnsf. to lay bare a person's dis- grace. Lam. R. to I, 4 (interpret. נוגות, ib.) they assaulted her . . ., מכתה את שהגו עד and then laughed at her dis- grace. Ib. to III, 33 (ref. to ויגה); Cant. R. to VII, 8. Hif. ההגה to murmur charms. -- Part. מהגה, pl. מהנים, מהגין. Sot. 12b (ref. to Is. VIII, 19) וכ׳ ואינן מ׳ they mur- mur but know not what &c.; Ex. R. s. 1 הוגין. Lev. R. s. 6 המנהמין אלו המ׳ hammahgin (Is. l. c.) that means the humming (sorcerers).
הגי, הגא ch. same; to reason, speak, study. Part. הגי. Targ. Josh. I, S. -- Pl. הגיין. Targ. Y. Deut. VI, 7. [Targ. Y. Num. XI, 1, v. next w.] Af. אהגי same; Y. Ber. V, 9a סגין באורייתא מהגי הוא ed. Lehm. (ed. מנהגו, מנהגיה) meditated much in the Law. Pa. הגי (v. preced. Pi.) to sting, to point at with scorn. Targ. Is. XXVII, 8 וכ׳ עליהון מגי (ed. Lag. מיגי, Bxt. הגי, ed. Wil, הני, corr. acc.) he pointed at them with words (of scorn).
הגי, הגיא m. (preced.) speech, meditation. Targ. Y. Num. XI, 1 הגיאן their speech. Y. Ber. V, 9 וכ׳ מנהגיה, מנהגו (=ה׳ מן) because of his meditating in &c., v. preced.
הגיון m. (b. h.; preced. wds.) recitation, reading lesson. Y. Snh. X, 28a top (ref. to להג, Koh. XII, 12) לה׳ וכ׳ ניתנו they are good for recitation, not for painful study, v. הגה. Ber. 28b הה׳ מן בניכם מנעו restrain your children from recitation (parading a superficial knowledge of the Bible by verbal memorizing).
הגיונא ch. (הגי, v. Pa.) derision, boastful talk. Targ. Lam. III, 62 (Var. להגיונ׳).
הגייה f. (הנה) speaking, recitation, study. Y. Ber. I, 3c top (ref. to Josh. I, 8) וכ׳ יום הגיית שתהא that the recitation of the day and the night be alike; Midr. Till. to Ps. I, 2.
הגים, הגין, v. היגה.
הגלשה f. (גלש) publication, revelation. Cant. R. to IV, 1, v. גלש (Ar. גלשה).
הגמון (אגמון) m. (ηγεμων) general. Targ. Is. IX, 13; XIX, 15 (ed. Lag. היג׳; h. text זנב). -- Sabb. 145b וקמטון א׳ ed. (Ms. O. ה׳; Ms. M. וקמוטרי א׳, Ar. וקומין ה׳, read וקמיטיו) a general with) his suite (comites). Taan. 29a Ms. M. (ed. אדון). Y. Snh. I, 19b top; a. fr. -- Pl. הגמונים, הגמונין. Targ. II Esth. הגמוניא, הגמוניה f. (ηγμονια) 1) commander- ship, consulship. Gen. R. s. 50, beg.; Lev. R. s. 26 ה׳ נטל וכ׳ got an appointment as a consul from the King. Cant. R. to I, 6; Lam. R., introd. (R. Yitsh. 3) ישראל עשו וכולן וכ׳ (אחת) ה׳ and Israel declared all these gods one govern- ment and worshipped all of them; Esth. R. to I, 9 אומוניאה (read; אגמוניאה, cmp. אגמון). -- Pl. הגמוניות staff of com- manding officers. Tanh. Yithro 5 שעליהם לה׳ (not להגמונות) to the staff appointed over them (to take them to the exile). Midr. Till. to Ps. CXVIII, 6 he will send forth וכ׳ על דוגמניות (corr. acc.) staffs to all countries &c. -- 2) (v. Sm. Ant. s. v. Eisagogeis) court, administration, juris- diction, district. Gitt. I, 1 לה׳ מה׳ from one jurisdiction to another. -- Pl. as above. Ib. 4b there were in one town וב׳ ה׳ שתי two jurisdictions jealous of each other.
2ן' (v. Ez. XLII, 12) to balance, make correspond- ing. -- Part. pass. הגון (cmp. ראוי, חזי) fit, worthy. Hull. 133a ה׳ שאינו תלמיד an unworthy student. Esth. R. to II, 4. זה לדבר ה׳ מי who was well. fitted for this mission?; Midr. Sam. ch. XIII. -- B. Kam. 80a לה לה׳ אלא נתכוונה לא she had in her mind only such a one as would be worthy of her; a. fr. -- Pl. הגונין. Gen. R. s. 48 Ar. Pl. הגן, part. pass. הגון=מהוגן; pl. מהוגנים, מהוגנין. B. הגן same, only in part. pass. Pa. מהגן, f. מהגנא= מהוגן, v. preced. Targ. Y. Gen. XXIV, 12; 26. Targ. Y. Num. XXII, 32 מהוגנא לא displeasing. -- Taan. 22b מילתא מה׳ דלא an unbecoming word. -- Pl. m. מהגנין. Targ. Y. I Num. XII, 1.
