הוי, הוה היה (b. h.) to exist; to be, become; to occur, come to pass. -- With part. מביט ה׳ he looked; ה׳ אומר he said, freq. used to say. Gen. R. s. I, beg. אני וכ׳ הייתי Iwas the implement &c. Ib. וכ׳ מביט הקבה ה׳ the Lord looked into the Law (as often as a thing was to be created). Ab. I, 13 אומר ה׳ הוא the same used to say. Gen. הוי, הוא, הוה, mt. יהוי. יהא, יהי ch. 1) same. Targ. Gen. I, 3;a. v. fr. - Koh. R. to IX, 10 גלי הוה הוא he emigra- ted, v. גלי. הויה, הוויה, הוייה f. (preced.) 1) existence, sttattus, condition, stabilly. Ab. Zar. 54b (ref. to תהיה, Lev. XXV, 12) תהא בהוייתה it shall remain in its status. Y. Ber. II, 4d bot. (ref. to והיו, Deut. VI, 6) הוייתן כדרך יהו they shall remain (be read) in the order in which they stand. Y. Shek. IV, 48b top בקודש ה׳ שתהא that it must retain its sacred character. Cant.
