זיג (v. זגג) 1) to be clear, bright, transparent. - Part. זיג, זייג. Pes. 74b וכ׳ דזיג ed. (Ar. דזייג) it was as clear as &c., v. זגוגיתא. Sabbb. 134a דז׳ והיכא and where there is a transparent spot in the child's rump. Nidd. 25a. Hull. 76b וכ׳ דזיגי כיון (Ar. דזייגי) when they are trans- parent although not white. -- 2) (cmp. Lat. vitrea bilis) to be glass-like. Keth. 61b לה זג she got a greenish bilious complexion (was swollen, Rashi).

זיגד, זיגוד pr. n. m. Ziggad, Ziggod (cmp. איזגדר). Pes. 113b; Macc. 11a (prov.) מנגד וז׳ חטא טוביה Tobias sinned and Z. was punished (because he was a single witness).

זיד, זוד (b. h.; cmp. דוד) to flow over, boil. Sot. 11a; Ex. R. s. 1, expl. זדו (Ex. XVIII, 11), v. בשל. Hif. הזיד 1) to boil, cook. Snh. 69a (ref. to יזיד kx. XXI, 14) וכ׳ מזיד איש a man (adult) cooks (prepares semen virile) and begets; Y. ib. VIII, beg. 26a משיזיד from the time he prepares &c.; a. e. --- 2) to plan evil, to act with premedditation, in full consciousness of doing wrong. Sabb. 69a וכ׳ בזיד זו ובזה בזה ה׳ if he acted in full con- sciousness of both (of its being a Sabbath day and of such a labor being forbidden on the Sabbath), that is the wilful sinner meant in the Law (punishable). Ib. במלאכה וה׳ . . שג if he labored under a misake as to the Sabbath day, but was aware of the sinful nature of the labor (if done on the Sabbath). Ex. זיהא m. (זהה, cmp. זיו) reflected light, reflexion. Yoma 28b, v. זוהמא. Ber. 58b זיהיה Ar. (some ed. זיהיא, incorr.; ed. זיויה) its (the comet's) reflexion.

זיהום m. (זהם) 1) the covering of plants with rancid oil, or tying up with manure (v. זהם). Ab. Zar. 50b ז׳ וכ׳ אוקומי giham is a means of preserving the tree, v. ברי I ch. --- 2) oyensive, turbid substance. Nidd. 65b, v. זהם. -- 3) social disqualifcation, spot in the family record (not subject to legal disqualification). Y. VVeb. X, 11a וכ׳ כהונה ז׳ משום אלא לה אין there is nothing against her except a social disqualification for priesthood, but the court cannot declare her &c., v. זהם; ib. XIII, 13d bot. אין וכ׳ בה; Y. Gitt. VIII, 49c bot. כהונה ייחוס משום בה אין (corr. acc.).

Gitt. 45b ז׳ אימליא she was filled with gall (anger). Ier. 51b. -- 2) venom, a fatal substance discharged by ana- imals of prey on attacking. Ab. Zar. 30b חליש זיהריה Ms. M.
